I was looking for a new rod and reel combo for my son-in-law for X-mis at one of the stores last night and wanted to get him a nice JM rod but noticed they are made in China! frown So, may get a rod from TBro or maybe a Croix I think they are both made in the USA? confused

I definitely consider where a product is assembled. I buy Toro lawnmowers and snow blowers because they are made in MN. It's not the final decision maker but it's important. I'm not sure but I'm guessing that parts used in the St. Croix and Thorne Bros. rods are made from foreign parts. Customer service and local ownership are just as important to me as where the stuff is made. That's one nice thing about ice toys. Many of them are made or owned by local companies. All things being equal I would buy from the made in the USA rod makers.

There isn't very much made in the USA as far as name brand products. During my tenure in the fishing industry, I've discovered even things that are claimed to be made in the USA are made from parts or assembled in China.

Dowsides of China made products is the lack of quality. Everyone I know that does business overseas is disappointed in the quality of work they do. Another downside is companies save a ton of money on production, but lose out on shipping.

Bring business back to the US!

That's part of the issue with not knowing. Many tell you it is all made in the U.S.A. and they one finds out parts came from wherever and it was assembled in the U.S.A.

One never knows.

I have many of the JM rods and even if they are made in China, they are a great rod with a very good warranty. I have never had an issue with one and I probably have 8 of them.

The Thorne rods are also very good hgigh quality rods and I have 5 of them. Once I did have an issue with one of my deadsticks. I ended up changing that rod to a jigging rod.

in my industry we are finding prices in china are rising to the point where it is not worth running projects over there. i am now getting higher quality parts domestically with shorter lead times and i have better quality control. it won't be long before made in the USA is the way to go again.

I was listening to MPR a couple weeks back and they had an in-depth news segment on this. With production costs (driven largely by higher wages) increasing in China, when you factor in the cost of shipping, more and more companies are finding that China stuff is just as expensive as U.S. stuff. Good to hear! laugh

I buy whatever product I need and can afford, wherever it's made.

i have many artificial lures, so i dont buy any anymore. i know the daredevil is made here and mine are in rough shape and i know i will replace them. i make live bait rigs myself, but to be honest i dont know where the parts came from. just buy the stuff bulk. good luck.

I work in manufacturing and as some of the previous posters have said the cost of making things in China isn't as cheap as it used to be. Tack on shipping costs, quality issues and poor service on top of that. A lot of projects I focus on are bringing some of our manufacturing back into the US. With our superior technology and automation we're usually able to beat out Chinese manufacturing now for cost and our quality is far above theirs. However, most materials are globally sourced so even if you buy something made in the USA parts of it are likely from overseas to some degree.

With that said, when I buy big ticket items, I'll spend more to get exactly what I want from a brand that is reputable and known for high quality.

We bought a bedroom set not to long ago that had a sigh near it that said Amish highlands Collection ba A-America on a sign next to it. Another sigh said built with minnesota grown Hickory. Before the salesman approaced I pulled one of the drawers out to look how well made it was and saw a small tag that said made in taiwan. When the salesman approached he said you know it well built since its made in the US. I asked how long has taiwan been part of the US and how many Amish people are living over there as I showed him the tag. He turned a little red in the face and didn't know how to answer.

Buying made in the USA is very important to me. I will go out of my way to let the retailers know this also.Yes at times it cost a little more but if it would help bring jobs back here I dont mind.I have lost 3 good jobs directly related to foreign competition.

So yes I will continue to ask for USA made products at stores.

Great we also just bought some very nice Amish made coffee and end tables. Now I better go home and pull out the drawers and look! shocked I try and buy what I can that is made in the US since I also have been in Mfg pretty much all my life and know where the jobs are going. China, just like Japan will increase their wages over time and out price them selves. We are already seeing things going to India and other places. It's just sad to think that things can't be made next store instead of a world away! frown

The thing I consider most is whether or not the thing I'm buying works. If I think the China made product will work fine, I'll buy it. If I think the China made product is a piece of junk, I'll go onto the next brand.

Not everything made overseas is junk. We've got suppliers overseas that blow our US suppliers away in terms of overall ability and quality. That being said, there are plenty of bad suppliers out there.

I gave up on that fight long ago. When you look into it are the products really from the USA? Many times everything is made/done in china or somewhere else then shipped over here and assembled or something trivial done with it so they can put a made in USA label on it. Which I find to be misleading the consumer to get more $$$$ out of his pocket.

It's just sad that the political leaders have allowed other countries like china to play by an entirely different set of rules when it comes to the enviornment, pattent rights, and numerous other laws which put the american workers out of business. Then still send subsidy money for stupid things to these countries.

Untill Washington gets their head out of their rear, I'm buying products based on the quality and price.

I don't care WHERE my stuff is made but really, WHAT its made of and how its made. I like things that works and withstand time. I would love to support American made products but half the time that is just false advertisement b/c the parts/product is made in 3rd world country out of cheap plastic material and cheap labor. Heck some 100% American made products aren't half as good as foreign products but then again, some American made products 2nd to none. I think I made my point. I stick to what works, I don't care about name brand.

Leech, go for the Thorne Rods. Not just because they are a Minnesota Made product, but because the quality is second to none. You simply can not compare any other rods to them fairly. They don't mess around and build with quality components. They also spine each and every one of the rods to make sure the action is true.

99% of the rods on the shelf (other brands here) will not be spined properly, and the ones that are just happen to be a fluke that happened by accident.

I have several Thorne Bros Custom Ice Rods, and I will never buy another off brand rod again.

TB rods are made in the USA. I know the glass blanks are ground by a company in California. The rods themselves are made by the guys in the shop (as is my understanding). I'm sure some of the components used are made outside the US, the the main parts are US made (and well made too!)

I don't know about reels though.

That makes me number four in this thread to concur with this notion. I am in manufacturing as well. Our division VP put on a huge presentation detailing the restructuring of procurement that lies ahead.

Due to shipping costs, higher labor costs, and quality, production is coming back to the US. The US may not have Japanese or German quality, but we are right behind them, and light years ahead of China and the other garbage manufacturers.

Right there is why I hate 90% of salesmen.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
