How many acres??

Recommended Posts

How many acres do most of you hunt on? Also when sitting in deer stand how close do others in your party sit from you? I've got 80 acres and there is only me and my old man that hunt do you think that we are to close to each other? There's 240 acres that borders us that isn't hunted.

I think one guy per 40 is no big deal at all. Obviously, I have no idea where your stands are located, so I can't tell you whether I think you hunt too close together. But, as far as working on that 240 also, it sure wouldn't hurt to have the options of additional stands or cover types to hunt...

I have an 80, a 120, a 320 and 50 acre as options. What's a bit crazy is the 50 carries the most head of deer during the hunt, the 80 carries the most as far as wintering deer goes. The 120 doesn't offer the dense type cover deer seek out during the hunt and the 320 gets intense bow pressure and would be crawling with deer like it used to until a gang of 5 bow hunters got access. At least more than half the deer are gone from there, they've moved onto neighboring properties and there's a 12 acre slough hole that the bow hunters haven't figured out yet, there's a ton of them in there and it's just a 1/4 mile away in the middle of a field. Now the 320 is my 4th option, left alone like not so many years ago it was loaded with deer, hence why we almost needed bow hunters, now there's a lot less, a lot less deer around. I think a lot of your question depends upon where in MN you hunt, what is the cover type, and can you guys sneak in and sneak out fairly easily, the 50 acre patch has 1 good stand site because it's primarily red willow, cattail, and tall grass, the 320 has about 3 quality rifle spots, the 120 has 1 good spot, so it varies.

I bow hunt about 800 but most fo that is open farm fields, and rifle hunt on a different 320 that is mostly open pasture. The good stuff (trees-cover) on the properties equates to about 1/4 of the acerage. Just me and two other guys.
