Really fun weekend! Son's first kill!!!

On Saturday I took my kids to Ada to do a little deer hunting. I took my four year old daughter Morgan in the ground blind with me and my brother took my six year old son Ryan with him. Morgan had a blast and it was really fun to get in the woods with her.

All Morgan wanted to do was see a "baby deer" and several times she asked/told me "you won't shoot it, right daddy?" I promised I wouldn't...

After half an hour or so Morgan's wish was granted. A doe and two fawns came out along the field edge.

Because I had to carry Morgan, my bow, two chairs, a backpack (mostly full of snacks), and a ground blind, I hadn't parked the truck too far away. Once the deer rounded the corner, they spooked and trotted their way right to us.

All of the deer took their turn posing for us:

This little fawn came in to about four yards.

It was great! Morgan was really excited and we had a blast!!!

In the meantime, Ryan and Rod saw a few deer, but nothing that provided a shot. Towards the end of the night a doe got downwind of them and spooked. When she did, a squirrel ran away from the spooked deer and up a tree about 15 yards from the guys. Ryan had been practicing shooting at a tree about 18" in diameter before we left to go sit- he could hit it about 1/2 of the time. Unbelievably, Ryan lifted his Red Rider BB gun up, took aim, and smoked the squirrel on his first shot! Now I realize this is just a squirrell and not a big deal to many, but this was like shooting an elephant to a six year old. He was very proud and really excited about the happenings of the evening, and so was I.
