New Moultrie M-100 & M-80 trail cams?

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of the Moultries, easy to use, good pics, good battery life, battery life indicator, cheap enough to where if one 'walks away' you're not out $300. I have two D55's, a D55IR, and an old Moultrie. I've bought the external battery cords and have the two D55's set up on small 12 volt batteries. The D55IR goes to a site that I check once a month, the C batteries in it lasted all summer last year. The trigger speed could be faster, but I set all my cameras over salt blocks, so they work fine.

The other downside with the IR is the night pictures are not realllll clear but you can count the points, upside is the outstanding battery life.

I like the D55's so much that when my old Moultrie went out I didn't even consider the other Moultries, I went out to Cabelas dot com, they were on sale, so I bought two, a D55 and a D55IR!!! smile As a bonus, if you spent $150, they gave me $5 shipping.

Sidenote, I was testing the old Moultrie, found out the problem was a bad SD card, so now I have 6 Moultries!! These cameras are addicting.

Sidenote two, I wouldn't bother with a camera with a in-camera viewer, who wants to sit out in the bugs scrolling thru 250+ pictures!!! I just swap out SD cards and sit at my computer. A hand viewer would be good if you're setting it up 200 miles away, you could check to see if the camera works.

Here are some night pics with the new M-80IR and some from my 6.0IR. The M-80 is way brighter. The cameraa were strapped to the same tree and pointing at the same spot. The trees across from the camera are about 25 yards across.

The difference is pretty amazing.

My buddy has a Moultrie and it works well but it is one big heavy sum-o-b and he has found it laying on the ground a few times because the plastic clip let loose. He now ties it on with the strap then chances the clip on the end of it. 2c

I just take the card out and pop it in my digi camera if I want to scroll through pics at the site. Most times though there is a pic or two you really want to see on a computer screen (big buck or something you cant make out) in which case I'll switch cards if I have one with.

This unit is about the size of a persons hand. Really small.

I got an M-80 as a gift and after one day in the woods it quit working. I am not saying they are all like that but it was very disappointing to find out after being out for a month that was only on for one day.

I did hear that some of the fisrt units out had an issue like that. Supposedly they got it correctly. I bought mine back in may. 2 coworkers have now purchased them also.

The new M80's & 100's are mini cams - they'll darn near fit in the palm of your hand. Nice feature if you run a fleet of cameras.

Although the trigger speed (1.6 sec) is average, the wide angle sensing cone and above average amound of flash light makes this cam very appealing. I wonder if Moultrie offers a Cuddeback exchange program? grin I can't complain too much, I've actually had great luck with the Cudde's over the years.

Great I'll let my buddy know about the new smaller size. He has had his for a few years now and paid some good cash for it at the time. Maybe he can use his old one under his ladder stand for support on a hill! grin

I just put two m80's out yesterday and will check them in a few weeks. My three older moultries will be used for bear baits for a month and then back to deer trails. I have two cards for each and swap them out each time.

Sounds like a good plan J. When I switch out my chips I will throw in some new batteries as well but that is usually ever two weeks. Have you had any Bears take a sniff or bite out of one of them yet? They seem to sniff out every thing that is different around a bait. We had one get pulled down by a Bear. You always know because their on the last "upright" picture. wink

I just picked up two m-80's myself. I've had them at the shack for a few months and really like the picture quality and size etc. I've had moultries since making the switch from over priced under performing Cuddes about 5 years ago. Bear hunting guys should check out camlockbox for m80's. It's a custom fit case for in the neighborhood of $25. No slop at all, a nice clean fit. Combine it with a masterlock python cable and you have a pretty bear resistant, theft resistant easy to setup system. A heck of a lot nicer than the modfied ammo cans that I've made in the past.

Yeah I customed this one it has metal tabs on the sides that slide the pieces together and if you bent them off it would open so I put the locks on it to prevent that. The Camlocks look like tabs would be conceiled to avoid that. I will get those next time.

Jay, nice box but why advertise with a bright red cable?? shocked Get a black cable and some camo tape on the box and the blue part on the lock and maybe no one will see it to even try out how strong the box is! wink

It's going to stand out either way big box on a tree...
You would be surprised what a little 'Real Tree" duct tape will do to hide a "big box on a tree" from a distance. I used it on mine and it worked very well. Color sticks out to people more in the woods then natural tones. wink

jeckbait....

what model do you have?

I am looking at getting one but some people say the viewer is small(yes it is) and hard to look at. Also if you bring your camera out in the woods you just stick it in there to look at the pictures but again its a small viewer but we'll see

thanks alot guys!
