You are never going to be totally safe. Visa and Mastercard themselves have had security breaches as well as our gov and several large banks. There isn't anything worse about this breach. You are only as safe as your employees want you to be.

I kinda agree. The fact that they stole my info sucks and makes me nervouse. But i actually think the whole thing is kind of funny, only becuase I dont believe it was done by people who are trying to steal this info for some synister reason (I could be completely wrong, just a hunch, and I have read some stuff written by nerds on nerd sites) People(Hackers) have been telling sony that their system is flawed, and sony ignored them, and continued to ignore them. So they shut them down. I know that this site hates TROLLS, but when they strike giant coorporations, it can be EPIC. And, the only one to blame is the one who got trololololed.

I agree, Im not too concerned that Im having my identity stolen, of course I will keep an eye on my accounts. I also never kept my CC and other info saved to my account.

I dont know if Id say its 'funny', these guys are thinking they are sticking it to the Man and getting back at Sony and yeah they kinda are but we, the PS3 owners, are the ones getting screwed. Sure sony is looking a little silly here but anyone who thinks these guys could not have hacked into Xbox live or nintendo's online network is crazy.

Actually, it isn't even the owners of the PS3 that are being screwed over, it's the companies that have all the online content that people buy / use that aren't making any money.

Think of the games that are online that the developers are banking (not so much right now) on downloadable content.

THAT would suck.

EPIC should be banned from the English language.

YES!!! Thank you! at least in the context people use it today.

"An epic journey through the treacherous mountain pass" That's ok.

Epic Fail??? Boo the man that says this phrase.

so to be on topic.... This scares me. I have very bad luck as it is, and with my luck, my accounts will be used, which will show up on the credit report, and that's bad right now because I am closing on a house in mid may.

I think Microsoft was behind it, who else would benefit more then them? I also think whoever did do it, has no interest in anyones credit card numbers. This wasnt about money, it was about the point that they could do it, and prove it.

why do i not remember this 08 christmas outage? maybe i just wasnt playing a lot back then.

It was actually 07 and it wasn't a complete blackout then. So many people were coming online then that it was shutting servers down, kinda like rolling blackouts. Not because of hackers.

On Wednesday evening, Patrick Seybold, Director of Corporate Communications for Sony of America, attempted to calm customer fears by posting a series of answers to frequently asked questions.

"We are currently working with law enforcement on this matter as well as a recognized technology security firm to conduct a complete investigation," he wrote. "This malicious attack against our system and against our customers is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible."

He explained that, though Sony can’t rule out the possibility that credit card data was taken, it is unlikely because that data had been encrypted. He added that there was no risk that the three-digit credit card security codes from customer cards were taken because Sony never collected that information.

The personal data that was illegally accessed, on the other hand, "was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack" Seybold explained.

He added that Sony is currently working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. And he said Sony is in the midst of initiating several measures "that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location."

Doubt they will figure out who did it, but at least they are trying.

Not too worried about the Credit Card number, its the credit card companies that are liable for the majority of it - bummer for them. The SSN thing is more cocerning, but its not even that hard for hackers to get that info. Just keep an eye on your CC and credit score, in the email Sony sent out it has links for you to pursue this.

The more I think about this, the more I have to agree that they weren't really after the data, they were more trying to make a statement. That being said, who knows what happens to the data down the road.

You don't have to give the PSN your SSN so how are they going to get that info? The unencrypted data would be your name and address. I suppose they could send you phishing email or something? Not too worried.

Thought I read that was exposed somehow, but pretty sure I didn't submit it, so I could be wrong. Phishing emails are the immediate concern, and Sony even says to look out for them in their email.
