I think I caught my first flathead today. When I saw the mouth I was thinking flathead but the coloring was more like a channel. There were tons of 7-10 inch channels in the area I was fishing but a bluegill turned out to be better bait. Something about the tail didn't look right though so I went to the KOTC site to have a refresher on what a flathead tail looks like and that was it. I was fishing an unusual location in southern WI; I could have gone swimming comfortably in the water but down the road I would have had 2.5 feet to drill through. I was struggling with a phone picture and a guy helped me out but that did not turn out well either. I could barely keep my hand around it but it looks smaller than what it measured. 24X15

Yep, you are right, that's a Flathead for sure. Nice Catch

One of the easiest ways to tell for sure is to look at the tail. A flathead will have a square tail while a channel will be forked. Also a flathead will have more of an underbite and a channel an overbite.

Just wanted to mention that I'm starting to line up some nice prizes for us.

Maybe not as plentiful as last year, but at least we'll have a few things to dish out. Check out the KOTC site for all the latest updates and details.

Thanks Darren for setting this up again this year! And a special thanks to those that have donated items to be given away. By looking out the window, I cant hardly believe the contest starts in a little over 2 weeks.

I wouldn't mind a few votes related to my post above. The place I was fishing is a large cooling pond that is fed from and spills into the WI river. I am not sure if it is stocked other than it used to contain striped bass which I am pretty sure were brought in. Rumor has it that they all died at some point though due to high summer temps. Anyway, would you vote that a river-fed pond fish should not be entered into KOTC? I have heard they get pretty big in there and I have no interest in "cheating". I don't know the liklihood of cathcng the same fish twice but if I had similar measurements and appearance I would not enter it twice. I probably won't fish there much more as temps rise so I don't care which way this ends up but it may alter my plans when April hits. Thanks.

By all means, enter any fish you catch there. They still have to bite your bait. There is no rule that the same fish cannot be entered twice and most likey has in the past (even by different anglers).

The ONLY thing that I really would hate to see is people sitting on top of a wintering hole and snagging them. Given the April 1st start date, that is kind of unlikely, but if I ever suspected it, I would probably disqualify the fish. Not something I want to promote.

By the way, no need to vote on the issue as I have the final say. smile

Not that my vote counts, but I agree with Darren, the rules of the game are, you have to catch it with a hook legally, within the borders given. So, everyone has the same chance to catch that big fish as you do. It just brings more excitement to the game.

I saw crestliner has a similar contest going, but their control item is an actual ruler they send you. Maybe we can find someone to donate a bunch of KOTC rulers for 2012!

I have 2 questions for them. first why is there not a catfish division and second do you need to own a crestliner to take part in it.

Email them. I just thought maybe in the future that wouldn't be a bad idea. the control item being a custom ruler of some sort

The ruler is not a bad idea. I researched that a bit for this contest. In the end though, I like to keep it simple and let people use whatever they want as long as the logo is there.

I can't give a boat away, but I've lined up some pretty good prizes.

Funny that they came up with a catch a release contest that uses your 3 biggest fish. wink

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
