Visitor at fish house

Setting in house at 3:30 this afternoon and hear tapping on side of house. Go outside to see what's up and what do I find, a SWAN. It stayed all afternoon. Later found out that others had been feeding it out on lake. DNR called me back & said same thing. Hope it makes it.

I got it to fly away when I was going to leave and it circled around and landed at the next house over 100 yards. If it doesn't freeze or a predator get it. If someone else would have been there I would have gotten a shot of me standing right next to it and it was not afraid. That's the scary thing. It's already trained to humans to feed it. I'll keep a update if possible.

I was fishing on the St. Croix on sunday, we had a flock of 18 fly over headed north!

I was guiding for perch (late ice) on Bowstring and had one land near us. We were the only ones on the lake. Think a white 5 gallon bucket may have lured it in. It didn't get that close though, maybe 100' or so. Had a green band on it.

There is a lake by the house that they have an aerator going and it's all open ice and those Swans are all just hanging out there. I bet I saw at least 20-30 of them.

Do swans come back earlier than other waterfowl? I've seen a pair of them in 6 mile creek right where it crosses highway 7. Pretty cool sight.

They stay around us in the winter. We have a stream that stays partially open all winter, so they stick around.

My dad told me when he was younger there was an eagle on our lake that would stay year round. It would swipe any fish just left on the ice if an angler ventured too far. I'd imagine that wasn't all that uncommon before fish houses became the norm.

awesome! swans can be quite docile if they are used to you - my dad has a pair that clean out his birdfeeder routinely, now they've started rapping on his windows when the food is out - if they see him walking on the other end of the lake, they'll be at his place without fail by the time he gets home. They've nested in front of his place for 3 years in a row now, even let him pet their cygnets

I would like a swan to visit much more that the mink that snuck into my Otter between the snow flaps a couple years back.
