burnt hole in arctic armor jacket

LOL I'm sorry but I do find this funny as I have burnt several jackets and now I notice MANY ice anglers with the same burn pattern. Almost like it is a mark from some secret right of passage. As much as melting a new jacket stinks it is a great conversation piece. I don't care who you are any group of anglers that don't know eachother from Adam can have show and tell with the muffler melts. Some try to hide the muffler melt and some wear it proudly. grin

After you patch it you can also get some seam sealer for tents and camping gear and seal it to maintain the waterproofing if you want. I sliced my SM bibs with my auger blade carrying it to drill another hole. We sowed it together and then seam sealed it. It's not as pretty as it was but it's holding strong now for a year and it's still water proof. Haven't gotten the muffler burn <knock on wood> yet.

I took a iron on patch and it worked fine. Cut it round so there are no corners to get hung up on. You could e-mail AA and see if they have a patch kit you can buy.

I've used the iron on stuff as well. Just remember to get it on and off fast, because just like the muffler the iron is Hot too! whistle

turn your auger around the right way??

I'm stoopid, but not that stoopid wink It was laying down after I used it and took my jacket off, and threw it on my shack, and it slid off shacl on auger before I could grab it.... doh!!! ok, I am kinda stoopid, ha!

Hate to say I did the exact same thing on my second outing with my AA. Sent AA an email and they mailed me out a big piece of the red material the jacket is made out of. Then I just used some of the waterproof superglue made for patching waders and it worked like a charm. Good thing about buring the hole early is that the jacket hadn't gotten dirty yet so the patch still matched the jacket color:)

Been floating between my Carhartt, Refrigerwear, and Columbia Quad suits all these years but have finally thrown in the towel to get an honest ice fishing suit so I ordered an AA suit. Still haven't gotten it yet but am anxious to use it.

The Carhartt's are comfy and tough but soak up water like a sponge. Of the three, it's my last choice for ice fishing.

The Refrigerwear has served me well even with the Mr. Heater burn in the jacket. Not water proof either but plenty warm and lighter than the Carhartt's, especially when wet. A bit stiff and slippery for my liking though. The plus side of wearing that green suit is when I wear my leather bomber hat I can ask anybody to see their license and they hand it over without a word, thinking I'm the game warden. laugh True. I've done it.

My Columbia Quad suit has been the best of the three and I sometimes wonder if I even had a reason to buy another suit. Ask my wife and she'll say "No!" grin

I opted to go ahead and get it though since I feel the need to update (the names of my suits should give their age away), and I like the idea of a suit made espressly for ice fishing. I chose AA simply for the floatation since I'm usually fishing off the beaten path. In fact, I prefer to be making first tracks. smile

I always had that problem while snowplowing with the pants on my bibs. I hosed them down with KIWI Camp Dry from the knee down and they don't soak up water anymore. Worked pretty nice. I had a friend who started his hair on fire while ice fishing. He bent over to grab a fish and got his head a little too close to the sunflower.

this topic been bugging me.

those are spendy suits that are made for ice fishing....

top three things I see wrecking any cloths while ice fishing are

1. heater

2. lantern

3. ice auger

it seems to me if I was going to spend the bigillon dollars a AA suit cost I would want it to hold up to at least a little heat????

hmm I will stick with $10 cotten sweat pants and a cheap fleace jacket.

I'm not sure what the material was, but my dad gave me some seed corn shirts he got one year. They were a "fuzzy" material. After you washed them a few times, the "fuzzyness" matted down a little, anyway, I wore it out icefishing one year and when I reached over the sunflower to hand my buddy a minnow, the WHOLE shirt "flash burnt" the fuzziness off! My buddy fell off his bucket laughing at the look on my face! It took less than two seconds to completely flash off, but it smelled pretty nasty in the house for a while! shocked

There is no doubt that these suits are not as tough as Carharts, but as soon as you put one on and realize how light they are, and how warm you stay, you will know why people are willing to make the switch. I have two burn holes, and two "slice" tears from the auger. All were repaired with some minor sewing work and tent sealer.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
