Fisherman For a Lifetime
What are your thoughts on the meat at Von Hanson's?How would you rate it??Thanks!
highlife4me
On a scale of 1 - 10 and 10 being the best they would get about a 3. I was not pleased with the quality of product I have purchased from them. I bought from them twice. Bacon has no smoke flavor what so ever was more like side pork. Sausage patties were horrible. And hamburger patties were average at best. Fresh cuts were too overpriced in my opinion. If you are ever in Nicollet stop in at Schmidt's Meat Market, you won't be disappointed. crothmeier
had some of their jerkey and it was terrific. the processed venison that we've got from them has been good as well. most of our venison goes to schmidts in nicollet, they've been great year after year, with the exception of our spicy sticks last year, they ended up dry and overpacked in the casing. Previous years they have been excellent.
hoggs222
IMHO, they were better before they got so many stores. Expensive and not that great of quality now. It'll do in a pinch, but I'd rather go to Ready Meats for steaks and whatnot. Or Kramarczuk's for processing venison. They have some of the best polish & beer sticks I've had. Bryce
Very happy with our store here in Shakopee. Old school customer service with a smile. Quality depends on the selection. We mainly stick to seasoned grill steaks when in a hurry and mn canoes for a bigger meal. Mushroom/swiss brats great along with the chicken swiss brats for the summer. Fresh bread = yummy. Variety of sausages sliced thin as you desire for appetizers. What they do to all our duck/goose/upland in snack stick is wonderful beyond belief. No idea what I 'd do with all that meat without them.
reinhard1
ready meats still in buisness, wow. it's been awhile since i've been in that neighborhood. i remember them in the early 70's. i agree that kramarczuk's makes the best sausage so they should do a great job with venison as well. good luck. Don't forget to ask for a sample of their ring bologna, you won't be disappointed. There pork burgers are awesome, I bring a lot of my game birds there and they smoke them for pretty cheap! The brine they use is awesome. I process my deer there and let me tell you, I loved everything they did. One of my friends is married into the family, and let me tell you, I love going over to his house for dinner I just am not impressed with Von Hanson's, every time I eat venison that someone had processed there it just not tasteful to me. Another thing is there are a few von hansons around here and it seems like a franchise restaurant vs an old school home-style restaurant. I know guys that travel to Jordan from out of state to get their game processed there. I also use to work with a few guys that use to live over an hour or two away, and they would place orders and pay me to pick it up and bring it to work for them the next day. Give it a shot! I think you'll like it, even though you might have already done so since you live in Shakopee
bubbabluegill
Ready Meats is going strong. Very good meat. And hot dogs. If you like fresh liver, there's is the best. Thin, sliced, not like that frozen [PoorWordUsage] in the normal grocery store. Never had a bad piece of meat from them, whether steak, roast, chicken, etc.
RIPN LIPS
Cottage Grove store does all are venison processing and we haven't been let down yet. Price for price they are comparable to everyone else.

Redlantern
I had gotten a gift card two years in a row from the brother in law for Von Hanson's. I used the Blaine store. I wasn't impressed. I thought the jerky was o.k. but the ribeyes and the grilling steaks were not worth the price. I think I'll stick with Fedors Market in Moundsview. archerystud
I've been using Von Hanson's for years and we love a couple of their recipes for venison processing. I almost always get a batch each of farmer style sausage and jalapeno cheese venison sticks every year.Their summer sausage can't come close to Schmidt's and I haven't found any I like better than theirs. I haven't try Kramarchuks yet but would like to sometime. I agree I don't see what is so great about the steaks.

They did a pretty poor job processing my deer last year. It goes wthout saying they didnt get my business this year.
hoggs222
The one thing that I was introduced to by an out of state friend from Von Hansens was their chicken bacon swiss brats. Very good for not knowing they were chicken brats, which doesn't make sense to me.
TruthWalleyes
Had a bacon, wild rice, jalopeno, something else, brat from von hansons saturday night...May have been the beer, but those were fantastic tasting brats! I love any brat with wild rice!
dewey1
BOLD AND TANGY BEEF STICKS ARE GREAT. SEASONED GRILL STEAKS ARE ALWAYS GOOD, BUT OVER-PRICED FOR SIRLOIN. ANOKA MEATS IS MY MY FAVORITE AROUND THIS NECK OF THE WOODS. (NOTHING CAN BEAT F&D PORKETTA, THOUGH).
Fisherman For a Lifetime
Well, I wanted your guys's review before I put in my comments below: - Meat is too expensive for what you get. - Meat sits out too long from day-to-day and gets hard/dark red around the outside and still sits there. - Their "double smoked" bacon and almost no taste, total waste of money. - Some of their sausages & beef sticks are good along with their "special spice". Overall assessment: dissappointed.

reinhard1
i have never been in a von hansons. but something is wrong when double smoked bacon has almost no flavor. do they smoke their own bacon in the store or where do they get it from? i have read most of the posts and this just kind of stuck out. good luck. Not positive, but pretty sure it's smoked somewhere, then brought to the stores. So little flavor I coundn't believe it, so I'll call them this week to kindly let them know. highlife4me
I thought it may have been a bad batch of bacon that I bought but I guess not. I can't believe they can call this bacon! Did von Hansons use to be a better meat market before they expanded to so many stores?
reinhard1
double smoked bacon is normaly more expensive and rich with flavor. from what i'm hearing your better off buying a brand at your favorite store on sale. good luck.
deerminator
I can't say I've ever been real impressed with most meat markets fresh cuts, probably because I am cheap. Ha! I would much rather hunt and peck for sales at Cub and Costco, buy a lot when its available and inexpensive and freeze. Sometimes I will repackage it myself to help preserve longer. What I do love meat markets for is unique creations they make. For instance, Wick's in Kandiyohi makes a brat burger with big chunks of pineapple in it that is pretty much one of my favorite parts of summer. Sometimes I have to be stopped from eating too many of them.
