Don't forget the BWCA/Voyageurs NP lakes for SMB (and LMB too). If you're willing to apply for a permit, paddle/portage back into the BW you shall be rewarded. Me, I'm too spoiled with my 1750 Fish Hawk, trailer, Jeep, and excellent lakes closer to me to mess around with the Gov't telling me if I can go there or not as well as all the manual labor anymore. But God bless those that are.

Thinking about heading to grand rapids for memorial weekend. On paper it looks like there are some great bass lakes up there!

Yup, there are alot of great, untapped lakes up in that area. My top 3 are all up there for big bass, and I'm pretty sure I fish the area that's been talked about here too. As far as bigger lakes go, I'd have to say:

Leech (never fished it but a buddy of mine does alot and gets some bruisers)

Pelican in Wright County

Most of the lakes in the Chisago area (Green, Chisago, North/South Center, etc)

I was also surprised to see White Bear on the list even though my midwest personal best came from there. I rented a cabin on White Bear for a year when I was in college. I fished it hard for muskies before school and after school every day. I didnt even bother going out on the weekends because it was such a zoo. I used to catch a decent amount of bass while muskie fishing out there, but it was rare to see one over 2 pounds. I did however catch a 5.75 pounder while throwing a super top raider for muskies one evening. I did not get a measurement on the fish, but I wish I would have. I weighed her and let her go. The fish was very long but also very skinny. I have never seen a thinner bass. Anyways, Since I left Minnesota 5 years ago, I have been stationed in South Carolina, Florida, and now in California. Since I cant walleye or muskie fish anymore, I have been focusing on bass and trying to get that elusive 10 pounder. I managed a new personal best 7.25 pounder a couple months ago while prefishing for a tournament, but no 10 pounder yet.

There is a place around the Grand Rapids area that I would put up against any other, in the state. If hit during the right time, to catch not only numbers but big fish as well. Was out there one day and caught a ton of bass with 3 going over 20"(the biggest was 22 1/2"). Every time I went out there we would catch a lot of fish and usially 1 or 2 over 5 pounds.

Musky, check your messages I wanted to see if we were talking about the same lake?

Um, yeah. There are a couple of doozies in the Rapids area...and the lakes aren't that big. My dad and I fish bass all summer around Rapids and there are some awesome lakes around. I don't think it would increase traffic anyway, but the Wabana-Trout chain is a good place to start. I'll stay mum about the others 'cuz they're smaller.

Jeeze, don't let some of those dolts on the GR forum see this. They'll be whining and crying that now everyone is going to come up and fish those lakes dry and leave litter all over and only locals should fish their waters, blah, blah, blah.

The 3 best bass lakes in the state? Ha! I couldn't even tell ya the 3 best in Becker county! Then there is Ottertail county, Hubbard, Cass.... Maybe we should break it down as the 3 best bass fishing counties or regions.... Too many great bass lakes.... God I love Minnesota!

I saw gull lake in the whitefish chain quite a bit, have any of you fished Pelican lake in Brainerd before? Me and my family stay at Breezy Point resort on Pelican lake every July, and I've quite a few decent fish there. It's mostly known as a walleye lake, but I'd say otherwise! grin
