Whining about Sunflower Heaters

What do you guys think about this:

I have the sunflower heater, the one that also works as a stove. I have had it for a couple of years and it heats great. The first year I used 1 lbers and last year I moved up to a 20 lber with a 6 ft hose so it can sit out side of me flip up. Well here is my issue, when I first turn it on it makes a whining noise. How long it lasts varies and seems to be proportional to the temp somewhat. The colder it is the longer the whining lasts. It seems that once it warms up is when it stops. I think the propane is restricted somehow. The only reason I am not quite sure that the ambient temp is not related is because when I used 1 lbers and the tank emptied and I quickly replaced it before it got cool in my flip up it would again whine for a while (a few minutes to longer) and then operate ok after some time. Saturday I was sitting outside fishing and I had it running near my feet and it would not stop whining until I moved it out of the wind. One more thing, I used it at the drive-in once with 1 lbers. The temp was around 40 or warmer and the whining still occurred. The noise does not seem to matter if I use 1 or 20 lb tanks.

Anyway I think I have mentioned most of the symptoms. Anyone got any ideas about what is going on? Does anyone else have this issue? And before anyone mentions it I am not going to get a Buddy. Nothing against them I just like the simplistic sunflower heaters.

Blow out the air/fuel mix tube and the head on the burner. Take a wire brush to the surface of the wire mesh, and then blow it out.

Also check to see if the mixing tube is loose or the nut on the bottom in loose.

The air/gas flow through the mixing chamber acts like a horn once it reaches the bell housing.

Occasionally something inside the mix chamber will make it howl too. Spider webs or a spider nest inside the tube can even cause it.

On the Mr.Heater web site there are tips on how to deal with troubleshooting issues on all heater models.

It's related to pressure. Mine does it worse with a 1lb than the 20lb. It always does it at startup with either one.

I was showed a trick this past weekend with the 1 lbers. If it is howling, pick it up and rock it back and forth, the whining stops.

LOL...oh great, we better not let the significant other know that we do this!!! I can hear it already, "You will rock your stupid heater to get it to work right, but why don't you want to rock a cut little baby??!!

My sunflower never does this either but it's not the heater/cooker style. It's the kind that mounts directly to the tank.

I was fishing with Jbohmer this weekend and it seemed like at one point the thing howled for 5 or 10 minutes straight...we also had trouble getting it to stay lit at times. Obviously wind plays a part but it wasn't excessively windy. These things shouldn't need to be babied like that.

I realize they need to warm up before the thermocouple acts right and the noise goes away but the problem with Jbohmer's was much more excessive than any one I've used in the past.

I think Ed Carlson may be on to something.

I've found that when using a large tank and hose it seems to act differently in the sequence I start up and shut down in realtion to how fast the valve is turned on or bled or if the hose was disconnected.

This is why I think it's pressure related.

Does anyone use the green hose with their heater/cooker? I have a buddy I bought the green hose for and would rather use the green one I have instead of buying another. Hopefully I'm not hijacking with this question but with all the other threads about heaters I'd rather not add another. Thanks!

The green hose will work, but a major PITA. It will get rock hard when it's cold and coil up and force the heater to move around etc etc.

I tossed mine in the trash.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
