Ice Auger Carrier

Depends on where your mounting it. That Otter tube is hard to beat but on a 4 wheeler the mad dog type mounts are nice too. Check for pics on Otters HSOforum and take some ideas from there.

I have the Otter tube and use it more for storage in the house and the mad dogs for on the snowmachine. I have friends with the mad dogs on their 4 wheelers and they work slick there too.

One big advantage to the Otter Tube is it covers the blade totally when not cutting holes or transporting. Even with cover off.

Northlander, does the powerhead get strapped by velcro on the Mad Dog? Is it pretty sturdy overall? I read some negative reviews about it, and its refreshing to hear that you like it. Do you use additional bungees at all?

Yes you can set the 2 handle bar holders in many different positions and then they velcro there. I only use another bungy when Im going on long hauls like on Rainy, Red and LOW. Local lakes I dont and some times I only use 1 velcro strap when just going from 1 spot to another a short ways away. The only gripe I may have is it can be tuff getting the velcro in the slots especially with gloves on.

Is tube long enough to handle auger extensions?

If so what is the longest extension it will handle?

Does it come with a cover for the power head or is that something I would have to make?

I do like the fact that the auger would be covered.

But the trade off is having a big clunky piece of plastic on your machine, unless it had or I could fab up a quick disconnect bracket system.

StrikeMaster has a new ice auger carrier on the market as well...

Yes, it is made by the Digger Anchor Co. here in MN for StrikeMaster, and comes from there expanded Digger on Ice Accessories Line.

It is a very secure, broadly adaptable, and easy to use Ice Auger Carrier System. 1 clamp, on and off in seconds, never a need to remove your gloves. A very smart ice auger transportation system.

A friend of mine is actually in the process of welding a stand that fits into the hitch receiver. It will hold the the whole auger in the upright vertical position. I will post pics as soon as he is done.

I came across one like this recently on another site dedicated to 3 wheelers. i just got one and was asking people if they use theirs for ice fishing. one of the members posted this pic. Pretty creative i thought. I dont know if the drill bit just hangs there or if its not strapped in all the way. Would be intereseted to see what your friend comes up with as well.

I've always been impressed with your setup ACRZ2K.It's too big for the way I personally fish because I don't have a Ranger but I'll tell you if I was into guiding larger parties or a commercial hut operator on a big lake this is what I would do too .Heck I still may fab up the same even for my bear ..It sure would save me rack space up front .

Thanks for posting it up again . I needed the reminder .

I may put mine on the front rather than the back.

But that is what I am talking about ACRZ2K.

Auger extension is issue is taken care of too!!

The only small thing I would add is a cloth cover for the power head but otherwise I like it!!

Two thumbs up!!

Thanks, I do use a zippered cover to keep the snow off, because the tracks really kick it up.

I was worried about bending the auger shaft especially when the extension is on, that is why I added the motor support. Since we generally only fish LOW and Red I like my auger loooong.

Some of the set ups have the motor hanging out a bit with no support. I wonder if this will cause problems long term.

I would make sure to always have the power head supported no matter what type holder you have. Ya that Digger/Strikemaster rack looks like it could cause shaft issues down the line.

I thought the tube was a pain and it took too much rack space if mounted there. The Strikemaster is $90 bucks!! Just those cheapie gun racks hold mine just fine with a couple bungees. I think we all screw around with the wrong sized bungees. If you use the right length straps you wrap and hook, not do 12 wraps and a stretch like we seem to do.

Anybody else experiment around with installing the gun mounts directly to your portable fish house sled? I'm not sure how well it would work, but I'd like to come up with something other than laying it on the bottom of my sled.

I'd mount it to my snowmobile, but I only use that about 10% of the time, the rest of the year I'm either walking out (early ice), or driving out (most of the season).

I could see the mounts being beneficial even while transporting with my truck as I wouldn't have to lay the auger on the floor next to the house, but instead mounted securely above the sled. This would free up space to store other items like pails and such.

I refuse to pay $100 for the Strikemaster mount that I too am concerned may cause damage down the road, especially bouncing up and down going across the lake. The tube style doesn't appeal to me as a sled mount.

Where is the best place to pick up cheap gun mounts?

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
