Thanks fishuhalik, I was told to get the best you can afford at the time. Luckily I had enough money save up for that particular scope. Those optics are amazing. Right at dusk or dawn that scope just sucks in light, crystal clear veiw. I wouldn't mind having your setup either Fishuhalik.

I notice alot of fellas having a gun handed down from there granpa or dad. Thats pretty cool. My dad didn't introduce me to the outdoors he had other interest. That must mean alot. I hope that I can hand my gun down some day. Good luck to everybody this season.

Mossberg 500 w/ 3x9x40 BSA scope mounted atop shoot-thru scope mounts so I can use the fiber optic sights below if the brush is too thick. Winchester 2-3/4" hollow point slugs from Walmart @ 2.29/box. Most deer don't run more than 30 yards or so (if they run at all) with an exit hole in their chest the size of a baseball.

Keep in mind, I hunt zone 261 which allows Rifle's. Used to be shotgun only and we hunt thick woods along river bottoms. Less deflection shooting a 1oz slug than a 150gr bullet out of my Rem. Model 7600 30-06.

Remington Model 700 in .30-06 with a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9 scope.

Of course, ideally I won't have to lug any rifle into the woods Nov. 6 because I'll be tagged out Nov. 5.

(North Dakota's season opens Friday at noon wink )

30-06 Remington Woodsmaster 742 is coming off the bench.

30-30 Rubberband Gun getting benched. I was suppose to graduate from the Rubberband to a 30-06 when I was a teen, but it was good at shooting deer dead so I kept using it for 20 years. With my son almost ready to join me in the stand with a gun of his own it's time to free up the starter rifle. I believe it is an honor to receive this gun. I was honored when my Dad handed it to me. The way we deer hunt has change over the years, I have learned a lot from my Dad, Uncle, Grandpa and Dad's Unlce and I am proud to be a supporter of letting small or even good bucks walk so they get big. If you don't do it, the guys around you get the bigger bucks almost every year. A solid 30-06 helps drop deer so they don't get into difficult places. My Rubberband Gun will change hands and I hope it gets taken back to places most guys don't like walk. My son is framing a target from the rifle range today. Adjusted his scope after I grouped 6 in a square inch and a half two inches high, he put one in the bullseye.

A gun used very little can have a lot of history.

I hunted with a Marlin 30-30 with open sights for a couple of decades, before moving to a scoped 30.06. Probably more deer in the USA have fallen to the 30-30 than with all others, and it's really all you need in the Upper Midwest woods where most shots are under 100 yards. Many a moose has also succumbed to the 30-30 in decades past.

I shot a 30-30 Marlin Carbine iron sights one year. It was just cool to shoot the gun my grandpa and his brother used for so many years. The Rubberband gun is a Savage Springfield Model 174 30-30 pump with 3x9 scope always at 3. Great stalking thick s#!t gun! Short, light, quick and deadly. The name came from the rubberbands wrapped around the end of the pump which were intended to quiet the rattle of the pump.
