Special Youth Deer Season

Recommended Posts

I am going to take my 13 year old son to SE MN and see if he can get a doe with the shotgun. He has had some bad luck with his bow and did not see a deer last gun season. He was sent a letter telling him that this years youth archery hunt in the Arden Hills Army traing center was cancelled. The letter was sent AFTER the deadline to apply for other hunts. That wasn't a good decision by anyone involved.

I'll be in the field with my 11 yo daughter on Saturday to see what we can see. I'm jazzed and she is as well. We hunted the early youth season in Wisc and saw alot of deer but none of the "shooter bucks" she had in mind but a great time on stand together. I'm sure if she gets a crack at something this weekend she will shoot, I can't hardly wait! I love this time of year!

Hunter got a fawn this evening, his first deer! He was using a .357 and made a great shot at 40 yards.

(FYI....I had my blaze on for the picture, but forgot his in the blind.)

This morning he had a chance at a 4pt buck at 20 yards with his bow, but I didn't think he had a shooting hole through the brush....he did! He has forgiven me and won't make the same mistake (listening to his dad) twice.

I drove threw the large WMA north of the cities this evening and saw 4 different guy hunting with no blaze orange. 2 were bowhunters the other 2 small game they had rifles. Arn't these guys supposed to be in blaze orange with the youth hunt going on ?

My son and I hunted hard for the last couple of days and had several missed opportunities to fill his tag. I had to go to the other sons band performance and my dad said he would take him out to his stand. He put a perfect shot on this young doe. Thanks Grandpa, I could not be happier for both of them.

Yes, they should have had blaze orange on if the youth season was open in that area. Small game hunters are supposed to have blaze orange on anyway.

After bouncing around to a few different spots, and playing the moon phase/solunar table movement, we dialed into a good spot for the kids. Friday evening my son took a nice doe at 40 yds. from a ground blind. Clean kill shot put her down in her tracks.

Last night my 11 yr. old daughter and I had 14 deer around us. She elected to pass on a 1 1/2 yr. old doe at 40 yds. She wanted a bigger deer. With ten minutes left of shooting time she had a nice doe come walking within 35 yds. I quietly told her we better take this one. She was set, stable, with crosshairs centered - click! Safety was still on. My bad!

I'm so proud of her for waiting on the first deer. She wants a nice buck, or at least a mature doe, and with her first experience I think she's on the right track.

She's hooked. She's looking forward to hunting with me thru the muzzle loader season, and I'm happy to have her along! She's a great hunting partner.
