H & R Snaketamer .410

Recommended Posts

I bought a new .410 h & r snaketamer for my 8 yr old daughter. I liked the lil gun so much i decided to take it out for a try. Well let me tell ya 3 birds later i'm extremely unhappy with the gun! All short 10 to 15 yard shots i took at these birds just to watch em fly off to live another day! I tried 4 and 6 shot 11/16 oz 3" so they shoulda taken em down. I had the bead on the birds head when it was sittin still and i've downed dozens of birds with my 20 the same way so its a bit of a mystery to me? All i keep thinkin is if i cant kill a bird with the gun how is my daughter ever going to?

You need to test the gun for point of impact. It's probably off. A .410 is not a gun for kids anyway. It's a gun for experts and even with an expert shooting it the pattern is so thin it'll cause random misses even if you are pointing at your target perfectly.

I agree with gspman! Let her use a 20. A Snake-Charmer is a great gun to leave in the back of the truck when you're traveling. We've killed a lot of birds with one over the years... Not sure what to tell you on missing birds. Hopefully they were being missed instead of wounded only to die after a short flight...

Pattern it. What choke is it? If it is an open choke the .410 does not have enough pattern density to hit the grouse vitals. As stated before a .410 for hunting flying game is a choice for experts. A 28 or 20 ga would have no problem taking out game birds. I only use my .410 870 for squirrels and rabbits which usually present stationary shots.

3 out of 4 birds got away with this gun. and the 1 i did get was pretty close(10 yds or less). We took it out today and shot some targets. They were definitely inconsistant. the shot looked pretty irratic.

I think the gun is just to short for a .410, it has a 19" barrel with a full choke. But believe it or not i shoot most of my grousse while they're stationary, or running. Yeah its funner to flush em but bb's in the meat is no fun to bite into. I shot 3 last yr in the head with my scoped .22

You're starting off with not very many pellets and a poor pattern probably out past 15 feet. Take it out and properly pattern tha gun and I bet you'll see thatit's called a snake tamer because it can kill a snake at 8 feet. Not much of a chance with a grouse and a handgun unless you pot it from about 10 feet with that gun.

Shot at a close one today 25 feet or so away and missed! He didnt move, prolly wondering why this guy and his Crued Noisemaker are buggin him?! so i reloaded, Bang! He flapped like crazy, "again" till i got up to him and ended his suffering, again... Well its good gun for shootin at the mailman as he's runnin out the back door, i'd be lucky if a couple bbs caught em in the calf, Ha!

The .410, unless in the hands of an experienced and very competent shooter is simply NOT an adequate bird gun.

There! Somebody had to say it. And that particular crude beast of a weapon, which was probably made in a former Russian truck factory, is probably best used as a club or door stop.

I just had to laugh a bit while reading all the reply's. My first shotgun was a H&R 410 that was built some time before the 1940s and I was able to shot my first duck, Ruffed Grouse and Pheasant with that shotgun. I was 12 at the time and by the time I turned 14 I had saved up enough to go to Target and buy my first Remington 870 12 gauge at a whopping cost of $129.00. Strapped the box to my bike and went home to admire my new toy.

Target and gun laws were a little different back then wink

I shot too many birds sittin still in the brush with a western auto bolt action 410 over the years i couldnt even begin to count. The truth is probably more than a half of the grouse I've popped were in the "sittin completely still hope he cant see me" mode.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
