Redlantern
Someone mentioned it earlier, excercise. Cutting calories just sucks! Now if you are willing to get off of your duff and burn a few more, it's going to be easier and faster. The ideas about diet that have been brought up are pretty much on target but take it one step further. Go out for a walk, a ski, a skate, a run. Anything but watching t.v. or sitting here watching the internet. Find something that get's you going and stick with it. If you get bored with it, find something else that'll get your thrill level going. If you think hard enough about it, you can find something. No excuses. Yup...Never underestimate the benefits of a good iron pumping program. I started in HS at 16 because I was tall and lanky and i thought chicks would dig me more with some muscle but then I just kept it up all these years.I like to eat as much as the next guy and enjoy my meats and beer but all things in moderation
delcecchi
Unfortunately it is easy to eat enough to wipe out the weight loss benefits of exercise. Exercise is good for you, makes you feel good and will help with weight loss but won't make up for that Tbone and 1 lb baked potato with butter and sour cream washed down with three or four beers for dinner. Or even that big mac and fries... Even like a Coke. Coke Classic is 12 calories per ounce. So that 20 oz bottle is 240 calories or about a 2 mile walk all by itself. PartyWhine
My wife got me started on salads years ago and now I'm quite happy to have it twice a week .... as the main course. BIG salads. Most important thing is fresh ingredients. You just can't let this stuff sit in the fridge.Mix and match with different lettuce, spinich, cuke, onion, tomato, sunflower kernals, almond slivers, raisens, grapes, maderin oranges, olives, a little cheese and some diced skinless chicken breast .... GOOD EATING.If you think you might like something else.... toss it in. All good.I'll toss in leftover walleye .... awesome !!!And be sure to try some vinegrets (sic?). Lots of flavors.I really like rasberry ... give it a try.One thing for sure rhine .... you'll be a "regular" guy.

DanOmite19
So the salad I make at the salad bar with 1/2 cup cheese, bacon, black olives, ham, green olives, croutons, bleu cheese crumbles, a pinch of lettuce, and a cup of dressing isn't healthy for me? Darn.
McGurk
Man, the next thing you'll probably tell me is that a Taco Salad with tmeat, sour cream, cheese, hot sauce, black olives and a smidge of lettuce for color all wrapped in a crunchy deep fried shell isn't good for me either! DanOmite19
As long as "salad" is in the title, its healthy...
tacklejunkie
How about a stir fry? Tons of thawed and dried frozen vegetables, little olive oil, chicken, lean pork or beef, over a little brown rice....
reinhard1
i'm finding brown rice is something i have to get used to. my wife loves it so i use it. i know it's "better" for you but i do miss my white rice i get from the korean market. good luck. Redlantern
Del, strictly cutting calories without excercise is going to slow your metabolism down. Not neccesarily going to lose fat that way. Up the excercise, and you will get more muscle mass and you are going to see a fat loss and a healthier you. I agree, though, that diving into a crave case after working out isn't really helpful to the cause of losing weight. Moderation in consumption and eating healthier foods are the way to go. Drink more water and you will feel less hungry. Drink more beer and you will lose the inhibitions to stay away from that late night sandwich with the heavy dose of mayo. archerystud
Here is a salad I made up at the lake this summer and now I make it a lot.Slice up half a cucumber into thin slicesChop up 1/2 a medium sized tomatoChop up 2 green onionsChop up 1-2 jalapeno's (remove white rind and seeds to reduce heat.Dressing is:3 T vinegar (I prefer Apple cider vinegar)1 T sugar (you could reduce it or maybe try a substitute)salt & pepper to tasteI always loved cukes salads that my mom would make but they always had a bunch of mayo in them. At least this one isn't full of mayo (fat).

Redlantern
I'd leave the sugar in it if it helps with your enjoyment. Sugar isn't full of fat calories. I think I'm going to give this a shot. I love cukes and tomatoes.
delcecchi
Believe me I am a big fan of exercise. But I was trying to say that exercise alone won't do the job of losing weight. Unless you get a job laying sod for the summer or are training for an ironman. One has to control their eating (and drinking) along with exercise to lose weight. Beer is 100 to 150 calories a bottle, coke is 140 calories for a can and 240 for that 20 oz bottle from gas station. And that isn't counting the chips. :-(If you are doing hard physical exercise (or labor) for hours at a time that helps. but a pretty good workout is only like 500 calories. But like I said I am a big fan of exercise. Six days a week. hour a day. too old to run though.
Redlantern
I agree with you , Del. I have a fairly physical job, which I love. When I was layed off it was hard to keep the weight off. Eating out of boredom wasn't helpful. I had to set my mind to eating less and finding something that I liked to do to burn calories. Running in the state park was good. It sure beat running on a flat, level road where everyone could see how pathetically slow I run. Fast paced walking is more pleasant. I busted out the snowshoes and cross country skis, too. One thing to remember is that the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns. Not sure if I'm wording it very clearly but the better shape you're in, muscle mass wise, the more calories your body needs just to maintain weight. Also, cutting back on too many calories without excercise can actually cause your metabolism to slow down, making it harder to shed the pounds. Breakfasts are a important for getting your body going in the morning. Smaller, more frequent meals also help. Eat what your body needs at the time and then there won't be extra to go into storage(fat). On paper this all seems so elementary, but put a huge rack of ribs in front of me and my logic gets thrown right out the window.

archerystud
Exercise is a key as well.I don't have a physical job and I can't jog because of knee injuries.Otherwise you need to make exercise fun. I got back into playing hockey and now I sometimes play 4-5 times a week. It does really help keep the weight off and allows me to drink a few adult beverages when I want to. Coach1310
Things that have worked for me....5-6 small meals per day... like has been discussedeliminating calorie intake with beveragesdaily excercise... nothing crazy, just somethingA REWARD day, where you eat like a normal person, don't go crazy and even on that day, I stretched the eating out, instead of one big meal. Eventually you have to feed the furnace a few more calories and you work towards your goal to keep the metabolism up, otherwise your weight loss will get stagnant.Now.... if lettuce and veggies tasted as good steak and baked goods, it would be a lot easier...
