Jig/Line combo

Flakehead

Recommended Posts

I purchased a rod and reel to use for jigging last weekend and wondered what some of you were using for line on your jigging poles. I bought a 1 piece 7' St croix MLF for the task. I am contemplating stringing one of the spools in a super line of the 10lb weight, 2/4lb dia. Give me some ideas how some of you are stringing up.

Thanks,

James

I used fireline for a couple years after using 10lb flouro. At first I thought it was the greatest stuff ever. You could feel everything and had the ability to pull lures through weeds with out getting a big clump stuck on there.

The only problem I had with it was that it wasn't clear. Sometimes it made a difference, sometimes it didn't. I spooled an extra spool with 6lb trilene for the times is did make a difference and honestly haven't used my 10lb fireline for jigging since(2 years ago). On a ML rod, 6lb trilene is perfect for jigging walleyes.

Try both, see what you like. If you end up liking the trilene, use the fireline for trolling. If you like the fireline, you're only out $7.

8lb Power Pro, with a ML rod you'll love the no stretch line. No more big hooksets needed, flick the wrist and it's fish on! Small learning curve with braided lines, but not a huge issue. Breaking out of snags is much easier than with mono, no rubber band effect. So give it a few snaps and if it doesn't pop loose, point the rod directly at the snag, grab the spool with your hand so it won't give line and pull. Hook will straighten or the line will break, easy as that.

Since I have two spools I think I'll do like Onafly suggested and see how I like the braded. rr56 tilted the scale for me to try it first. Experimenting will be fun if we can locate cooperative fish to run the test on.

Thanks for the insight!

Good idea!

85% of my walleye fishing is pitchin jigs, the other 15 is casting stickbaits. I have tried alot of lines and use the 6/2 fireline or 8 pound power pro. The 6pd fireline is way stonger than 6 pound. If the water is clear i''l use a small swivel and a 2 ft piece of 8 pd floucarbon leader. The leader always breaks first...

Like they said - ease up on your hook-sets and set your drag right. You should love the superline. cool

I would go with 10lb fireline, and use a flouro leader. No stretch, you can feel everything with this line. I usually set the drag a little lighter so I'm not rippin lips off of anything, but that is the only negative thing I can think of. Plus I have had the same fireline on one of my poles for 2 seasons now and it's still as strong as it was the day I spooled it up.

I have not been having that kind of luck with my fireline. I'm replacing once or twice a season, and think i'll be switching to power pro very soon.

Whats been going wrong with it?

I fill the empty reel spool 3/4's of the way with old mono, then fill up with fireline. After a few years pull the fireline off the reel and reverse it, then get another few years of ues. It will start to get a little fuzzy and frayed looking but I does not seem weaker in anyway...

I pretty much do the same thing.

It's turning grey too soon and fraying, i think my spools on my spinning reels need to be sanded down. My line catches on them alot and that could be a part of the problem.

Also, i picked up some fireline from the berkely outlet store in spirit lake IA...worst stuff i've ever seen. It was thin, already grey, i think i lost 10 lures before i threw all that line away. Didn't have that problem last year when i went there.

Stuff out of the box looks great, but quickly turns to grey and frays.

am I the ony guy here that uses 6lb XL mono on a 6' ML anymore? I like a little give..

Nope grin

But I like to use 6lb Gamma for most of my Walleye fishing but I will still use 6lb XL on my shore fishing rod that I use just in the spring because if I have to get rid of a bunch of line the stuff is pretty cheap and very strong.

Could be your reel, but mine turns grey also. It doesn't affect the integrity of the line in anyway though. It's still strong as ever.

I have had to shave a spot or two on one of my reels as it got chipped when a young bait shop worker didn't have my spool on tight when spooling on the machine....anyways I just used a metal file and shaved it till it felt smooth.....I have used this reel for the last 4years in open water and hard water and I only use 4lb test and under on it and have not had an issue with it since....

I use suffix 20lb on my rods. its only 6lb diameter. I mainly fish the river but also use it on mille lacs and have caught just as many fish as the people in the same boat as me but they are using mono 6-8lb. I love the braids just for the fact of the sensitivity. I just built my own rod and I am excited to try it out for some eyes! Ive used it to catch bait for cat fishing and I can feel every wiggle the fish makes!

Thought I would comment on the results of my new jigging pole. I was very pleased with the performance, of course for a buck 80 I should be :), right? Anyway, the 7' length turned out to be a great decision as it was long enough to keep it out away from the boat and troller prop. With wind conditions gusting to 25mph last thur/fri the boat got out of control pretty fast even with the tiller drive motor. I ended up spooling with braded hi-vis 10/2 with 4' of 8# flourcarbon. I was surprised at how hard I had to set the hook as the first 4 eyes fell off in the boat and a nice one at the edge of the boat. The rest of them I set it a little harder and had no problem sinking the jig in.

Good luck all!

James

6lb mono for lakes and 6 or 8 for rivers. Been a XL beleiver for years but I picked up some Maxima this fall and I may be switching to that.

Tried the supper lines on my jig rods and do not like it. like some of the other people said get a spool of both and try them out see what you like.
