I am going to get a new hand auger for early ice and stuff, I have it down to two of them, both 8". One is a Strike Master lazer and the other is the Nils. The price of a replacment on the nils is higher, but I want the best cut and fast cut, what do you think

Yeah I am hardcore strikemaster Guy too but since I have gotten a nils I got to say they are the shiznit.

I had a couple lazers and they were fantastic, but the nils is so much easier. Two hands/arms doing the work plus a more precise and sharper blade (thanks in part to to Frank smile ) makes a cutting a hole so much easier and faster.

Cutting a 8" hole with a nils is easier than cutting a 6" hole with a lazer. That is a true win win. Its hard to find something where you get more for less. The nils is a rare example of exactly that.

You really can't go wrong with either one honestly, but the nils is definitely the best of the best for hand augers.

You will be completely amazed on how fast and effortlessly the Nils will cut a hole! I've had mine for several years now and it is still sharp. I always keep the cutting head covered. I also own a SM powered auger, sold my SM hand auger after seeing how well the Nils works.

Just and FYI for folks with a strikemaster or iffin you find a good deal on one... strikemaster does make an add-on offset handle. You'll have to get it direct but iv'e had one for 10-12 years and it makes all the diff in the world! The Nils are awesome and they do have a far better paint job on the augers though...

"Best cut and fast cut"

Best cut as in, well they both make a hole in the ice but if you mean with the least amount of effort, for sure its Nils.

Fastest cut, again Nils.

Really there is no comparison.

Replacement blades aren't cheap for the Nils but at $42.95 I wouldn't call the Lazer blades cheap either.

For $20 plus shipping you can get your Nils blades sharpened. A Nils blade can be sharpened many times over if your not taking big chips out of the blade or if someone hasn't sharpened them incorrectly.

You might find if you get a NIls hand auger your not going to limit its use to only early ice.

Considering I go to the power auger when the ice gets thicker than 5-6 inches it doesn't make any difference what brand. What's one more turn while only really being you'll use it 2 weeks out of the year.(normally) Not worth the extra money for Lazer or Nils just buy a blue SM.

Now, I guess if you don't have a power auger go with the Nils.

I agree with joneshat11 if its earlyice and u have a power auger it doesnt matter. 6 inches is nothing use a hatchet laugh If u plan on using the hand auger all the time, I would go with the expert advice previously given.I am a 8 inch SM hand auger owner 36 to40 turns to 22-24 inches of ice.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
