Anybody Seen One Lately?

I haven't seen one in years in Minnesota, but I see quite a few down in SW Wisconsin every spring morel hunting. Not sure if its true, but I heard the pesticides took a toll on them up here. Wish there were more, they are a pretty cool bird.

Actually in our vicinity they seem to be making a come back. We had some that came to the feeders some 20 odd years ago then didn't see one for about 10 years. The past 4 - 5 years have been seeing them in our off site pasture and hearing them when not seeing them. There were some in our yard this spring visiting the feeders again. It's not like it was when I was a kid after all the elm trees croaked in the river bottoms but at least we're starting to see them again.

I saw my first one in decades,a few weeks ago by Camden State Park, 10 miles from Marshall. He was kind enough to pose. It was actually quite thrilling.

Ken, I didn't know you ever traveled to my part of the state. Pipestone is just 45 minutes from Marshall.

I used to see a lot of them growing up in Iowa. THey seem to be declining no one seem to know the reason. Competition with starling for nesting sites has been suggested. I have a friend who lives in Wisconsin, he was involved in study of redheads being run by the Cornell ornithalog dept.

I used to see them on my uncles farm all of the time as a kid growing up but they are getting very hard to find anymore. There used to be a pair of pileated Woodpeckers nesting in the woods behind a farm we rented near Courtland some years back. They make a great deal of noise and are pretty impressive birds.

I think the reason the redheads are not as abundant in this area is due to all of the groves and farm sites that have been bulldozed and turned into farmland and that what is left is better maintained so less old hollow trees are there for them to nest in.I also wonder if all of the spraying that they do these days for aphids and other insects has led to some of the decline as the pesticides work through the food chain.

Great pics! Saw one between Waldorf and Bugtussle just last week as I drove through the area. It was in fact near a little used farmsite full of dead trees. I continue to see and/or hear them almost daily in the neighbors pasture we rent. I suspect their population is cyclical and the decline likely has a lot to do with fewer dead and decaying elms such as we had during the '70's and '80's. Was the population perhaps abnormally high during that period due to that? That's what they pay someone to do studies for. I also suspect if the emerald ash borer lives up to its billing, we'll see woodpeckers all over the place especially once the trees in the woods start to decay and are loaded with boring and tunneling insects. Right now we're seeing plenty of dead/dying poplars in peoples windbreaks including some in my own. Based on my observations here and my Mom's at Spring Valley, I can't see any correlation between soybean aphid spraying and red-headed woodpecker sightings. In fact we've seen more in the past 10 years, roughly the same timeframe as soybean aphid control has been practiced.

Only one I ever saw was is SW Wisconsin while turkey hunting. What a striking bird! Beautiful.

Several folks around our cabin in NW Wisconsin have reported seeing them this summer, including one on my feeder as I was out fishing. frown Alas, I did not get to see him.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
