Surface Tension
After applying for a very long time, I was drawn for the 2010 Bull Moose Hunt. Got my letter yesterday.Looking forward to scouting, which will include fishing some trout and eye lakes while I'm up there.

PROV
I can't believe it!! I've been trying for 19 years now and it finally happened. One thing I wouldn't mind trying to do is this. Talking with those of you from past seasons, to see if there was anything that you'd wished you'd done or not done. Things that wished you'd brought along or not. Any words of wisdom out there? Sorgy
PROV, Yes there are things I would do differently. 1) Scout- Scout and scout some more(we did this). After you have selected your areas that look good Scout them in the very early mornings 2 hours before daylight on calm quiet mornings till 1 hour or so after sunrise You can hear the cows calling and bulls grunting from quite a ways away. Clear cuts with swamps around were key- the animals would come out right before dark and then spend the night and return to the cool swamps early the next morning. We did the scouting but it took us several mornings into our hunt to pin down where a herd of moose was every morning. This would have made a big differnce in our hunt in 2006. 2) Don't write off areas because you are not seeing tracks or moose rubs. Moose have big padded feet that do not leave tracks like whitetails do. They may be utilizing the areas but the tracks are difficult to see. Rubs did not appear until a little later in our hunt. We did not see many rubs out scouting. If you see small willow clumps on the sides of trails look closely for last years rubs. I will try and post some pics of these rubs at a later date. 3) Set a goal for an animal that you want and stick to it. I succumed to the a smaller bull would taste so much better than a big bull--- and We have to shoot a moose to have a successful hunt-- its all [PoorWordUsage]--I enjoyed all aspects of our hunt and even thou I took a bull I am not 100 percent happy with the results because I new we had a very large bull in our area and it was just a matter of time Good Luck Steve
PROV
Thanks for the input. We were up on the shore last summer for a family vacation. I was surprised at the amount of sign that I was seeing on the trails. One morning, I saw one on the road while I was driving up ahead and got within 30 yards of it before it started to move. Then the young bull decided to run in front of me for close to 1/4 mile before it turned off into the woods. That was over the 4th of July week! Can't wait. Anyone else have any advise. kurtkwe
Been on 4 moose hunts with 3 occuring in the BWCA and one outside. Most people road hunt them if your zone is outside the BWCA. They drive the areas that have been recently clear cut. It was not something I would do but to each his own. What zone did you draw your tag. Archerysniper
If anyone got drawn for area 77 let me know I can give you a few areas form my hunt. I found a reallty good area on the southern edge of that zone where eneryone else just drove by. We took our bull in 2008 and my friend took his in 2005 in the same area. PROV
The area that I drew is #72, half way up the Gunflint trail. The area is just north of Grand Marais. I've started looking at different resorts so that I can find a place to stay. Heck I'd willing to tent it as long as I had a place to shower up. Archerysniper
We tented it so we could stay in or hunting area and hope that other hunters would see it was occupied and hunt else where. We stayed in the tent for 11 days ate off a camp stove from cans and I think that made the hunt more special. Just take baby wipes with they work great when no showere is avalable. If you get sore we went to the american inn in tofte and used the steam room shower and hot tub.
