Spoons work great and are definitely stereotypical "pike" lures. Dardevle is particularly known for its history as a pike producer.

My only tip is that I don't like to fish spoons fast, I NEVER burn 'em in. Slow rolling and big wobbling spoons are what I like best.

The ol' redeye spoon is another classic pike lure. I prefer krocodile spoons myself. Perch color is my favorite, but blue/silver or clown are good colors too. I've probably caught more pike on johnson's weedless spoons than I have any other spoon, however.

Yup the standard red/white or Five of Diamonds spoons are great pike lures. 10-20 years ago they were a staple. I don't think people use them as much anymore, so a lot of these pike have not seen them very often.

Also agree with JB on a Johnson silver minnow for those pike in the slop. I usually put a Gulp leech or nightcrawler on it and drag it through the pads. More of a bass setup, but I've caught plenty of pike that way too.

I'm glad to see the johnson's minnow is coming out with new colors instead of just silver and gold. I bought a perch colored one, and my wife a silver/red one last year and they look awesome in the water! I always attach a twister tail to the hook as an extra attractor.

I'll have to check into the new colors. Always something to fill up your tackle box.

You have some good advice on the very excellent use of spoons. As far as burning--yep--keep a good slow wobble. However, in Fall, a large spoon speed trolled over weeds can produce large NP.

When i cast for pike the very first thing I throw is a spoon.

Spoons work very well they are all I ever use for pike. The orange and shartruce(sp?) daredevils seem to have worked very well the last couple years.

when we were on leech last spring all we used for pike were spoons. Gold smooth surface weedless doing a slow troll worked wonders, i think all toll my son and i caught and released over 20 pike. Never did catch any on other lures, i did use a blue and silver dimpled spoon that did pretty good on both pike and walleye.

Glad to hear those Fish Trap spoons work. My dad - who doesn't fish all that much - got talked into one at the Sportshow after listening to the guy's schpeel. I gave him a hard time about it, hopefully he ties into a good one and gives it all back to me.

I've had luck recently with a Rapala Minnow spoon. Nice slow retreive produces a lazy wobble that even a few weed walleyes couldn't resist last weekend.

As for the Johnson silver minnow, I use a twin tail grub most of the time as a trailer.

I go to spoons early and late season when the weeds aren't much of an issue. In the middle of summer when weeds are up high, I turn to spinner baits to fish the same water. Before the weedline forms, troll spoons in 10-12' of water over the top of the weeds. Works great.

What color and style spinners are used for pike fishing?

All of them... Generally on inlines they'll hit anything from size 3 blades all the way up to double 8's (with 5 blades being the sweet spot most of the time). At times color doesn't even matter. You really only need 2 kinds: high vis and natural looking.

I have less luck with spinnerbaits but I find the willow spinnerbaits to be a bit better than the colorado. Usually I use 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits.

Do any of you guys use Double 10's for big pike? Haven't seen anything on any blades (big or small) the 2 times I've been out but all my pike have come on "muskie" lures, I'm fishing cold water pockets so not worried about the little guys. I'd think a 36" pike would hit a double 10 but I could be wrong. smile

you can catch northerns on other things? news to me

That's what I was thinking! Spoons and pike are like PB & J. Classic combo.

As far as size of baits, I think we often undershoot... Pike are said to target prey at least a 1/3rd their own size (i.e., a twenty pound pike will eat a 7 pound fish!). Check these pics out (if you haven't seen them online already):
