Joey the fisherman's first ever turkey hunt.

We set out this morning to find Joey the fisherman a Tom we got to our spot plenty early enough and set out a hen decoy.

Joey asks me if this was a good spot and I told hi that the birds roost about 300-400 yards a way on the neighbors property and fly down to this spot quite often. Just then 2 tom Gobble, the look in Joeys eyes and he says did you hear that dad and I nodded yes so I let out a couple of clucks to get them going and they gobbeled on que then an owl joined in and they turkey really started going nutz after a bit I clucked a few more times they answered back and that went on until morning light hit ( about a half hour)then the birds souinded like they were moving away from us but all they did was fly down to the ground.

Once on the ground they werent as vocal and I was goin to give a couple of calls when in front of us at about 80 yards up in an oak tree was a hen clucking and here they come ( the Toms) I knew there was at least 3 toms mabey 4 so I told Jeoy to get ready and I made a couple soft purrs and clucks so they started towards us then Joes gun slide down his rest and the hen in the tree busted us flying out of the tree and onto the field and ran off quickly and the 3 toms followed.

Joey said it was exciteing to hear and see some turkeys.

I suggested that we back out of the area and try ther eat a later time so it was off running and gunning.

On our way to the first spot we drove by refuge land and 30 yards off the road was 6 hens and 2 Toms full strut. fun to watch

the rest of the morning was a flop didnt even hear a gobble for about 6 miles of walking.

We went back the the spot that we hunted in the mornig knowing that the turkeys were still around and not botherd as of yet so we set up again and I made a couple of calls and Joey says did you hear that gobble shook my head no and made another call then I heard them gobble yes them 3 toms for sure and then seen a turkey dash acroos the field, pointed it out to Joey and he shook his head that he seen it. told him to get ready and I called on the slate and they answered back. then one turkey slips in around out far left side and walks with in twenty yards of me. I was behind and left of Joey at the same time 3 more toms follow this birds track I'm soft clucking trying to turn them they stopped about 50 yards away I motioned to Joey to turn and get on 1 bird and he did like a pro I soft clucked when the bird was at 35 yards and it stuck its head out and Joey Laid the smack down on this bird..

He stands up and says WOOOOOOOOO BBDD Big Bird down DAD I fell on my arse laughing with joy and I,m so proud of him.

This bird just came off af a good fight the broken feathers on the tail were fresh and he had an wound from a spur on his lower neck area

Great job, both of you! 25 LBS. That's a hawg!!! I've hunted turkeys for 30 years and never shot one that big. Awesome!

Interesting note, that's the second multi beard bird I've heard of already this year.

WOW good job to him for sure, off topic i dont hunt whats a spur? like the talons?

Yep

the best part of the hunt for me was wittnessing him pull the trigger I think it was better than my first bird to have him do it.

I also for got to mention and this is great. After he shot the bird I asked him if he heard me calling, clucking and purring and his Response was" NO I did hear anything except my heart pounding in my ears and he goes THUMP,THUMP,THUMP

He's hooked for life and I hope he never loses that feeling or that sound in his ears

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
