Ryan Longwell?

Is he retiring now? I know the Vikes signed Rhys Lloyd, but I was wondering what we need three kickers for? I know Kluwe is not leaving and Ryan has a good-long carrier. Anyone heard if he will be with us this next season?

Ah! I get ya grin . Kickoff only type thing. I know kickers/punters hate the kick off. It may look easy but I assume it is not "easy" on the body.

Still? Do we need three? Couldn't that third spot be better served somewhere else on the team?

Edit Note: I guess running three starting QB's (quality) on the roster is no problem, why not three kickers? grin Backup for the backup type thing. You are always a pulled muscle away from a change most times anyways.

3 starting QB? lol, we had 1 starting qb last year, and assume we will have one this year (:

I agree it is dumb to have 3 kickers, but the value of getting a couple touchbacks a game is worth having the 3rd kicker on the squad!

Getting a few touchbacks each game is a lot like having more good tacklers and playmakers on kick-off coverage.

A kickoff specialist might get 2 or 3 or 4 touchbacks each game. It's hard to imagine that the last guy who didn't make the roster (because of the kickoff specialist) would make 2 or 3 or 4 good plays each game.

So I'm in favor of it. Like dtro said, letting the other team start at the 35 and only having to go 30-35 years to get in scoring range --- no thanks!

Lloyd can both kick and punt so he serves a dual purpose as a backup besides being the kick-off guy.

That's what a team needs, you all with football kids, get them to be able to both kick off, kick and punt! What a concept. Every so often I ask myself why one guy can't do all 3? One more roster spot avail for a position player.

I was lucky enough to get him on my Fantasy Roster last year and I thouht he had a great year. The little research I did says otherwise. Only 5 touch backs all season.

Quote:
Ryan Longwell converted 92.8 percent of his field goal attempts last season (26-of-28) but managed only five touchbacks on kickoffs. Opponents started their average drive at the 27.5 yard line, ranking the Vikings' kickoff team No. 23 in the NFL.

His contract is as follows:

Quote:
3/11/2006: Signed a five-year, $10 million contract. The deal included a $3 million signing bonus. 2010: $1.5 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus due 3/7), 2011: Free Agent
