im sure this subject has been covered before. but, do any of you guys have ur dogs chipped? is it really necessary if my dog has a good collar with tags. if so, how much did the chip and set up cost??

Yep, 12 dogs & 12 chips. If someone finds your dog & wants to keep it. The collar & tags are in the dumpster. The micro chip is not so easy. I do micro chip for people ho buy our pups for $50 including registration. I think most vets are $75 to $100, but I am not sure.

Definitely chipped our boy. Collars and tags can fall off or be removed. A chip is in there for good. If your dog gets stolen, the chip will prove it is yours.

Got ours at our vet for $50. The Animal Humane Societies in the cities do regular microchipping clinics for about the same price, too.

Both of my dogs have chips. Most "good" breeders now place chips in their pups! Just makes sense given the low cost and the value if your dog is lost or stollen.

Gus the Dog is chipped. If I rememeber right I thought it was really inexpensive. I think the registration was more than the chip and procedure. I have a Home Again chip.

A chip is a must!. Dogs get lost during hunting, someone finds it and brings it to the vet. They run the scanner over it get the number, checks the data base and BINGO! the have your info.

Benn chipping mine for the last 15 years. Gives you peace of mind if your dog gets lost on a hunting trip. The chip can be traced through a national data base.

All my collars read "Reward" and my phone number. Thats it. Not my name nor ever the dogs name. Why give a thief a head start. Plus most people are greedy... if they know they will get a reward, they generally will turn the dog over. I use my cell phone number as I would most likely be in the area of where my dog is lost. I also quit using danggling tags on collars. ALl my collars including the e-collars have it done in permanant marker on the collar itself...

My dog has a chip but also my cell phone number on his collar.

It has already came in handy twice.

The one time I was tearing down the portable fish house and when I looked back, he was gone! About 10 minutes later after hollering his name I got a phone call from a number I didn't recognize. "Missing a dog?" they asked.

Apparently he mistook this guy's truck for mine...followed him half way across the lake (in the dark)...also raised his leg on 2 guys in a portable, lol, as well as every other permanent house he trotted by. I got him back right away, and was very thankful. Would have been tough to explain that one to the kiddies.

Having a cell phone number along with a chip is an excellent idea.

sounds like the yays have it. my pup is scheduled for her first rabies shot next week, so i guess i'll be inquiring about a chip as well. afterall, its the least i can do right.

Our labs have had chips. Oscar came from an animal rescue operation and they had it in him already. When we got Maggie as a puppy the breeder offered to do it for $20 right then and there. That one was a no brainer.

Both were the Home Again chip.

I recomend the chip also. I have my buddy chipped and tagged. One day was walking around the house and there are his taggs hanging in the shrubs. The ring had sprung. chip is pretty much fail safe, tags aren't.

I have some chipped and some tattooed. My chip on one has moved around. It cost 35$. I have heard of some chips floating all the way to the chest. They can bring a dog back home, but many vets do not scan a dog. Plus if they move, Do they scan the whole dog? I have read that only 20% of lost or stolen dogs return home. But thats better then none. I like the tattoo as well because all vets check the ears and then it is seen easily. Weather they reference it on a stranger, who knows. At least we try to do something to get them back is how I look at it. If you do nothing theres little to no chance of getting them back. It should be policy for all vets to scan all dogs that have not been seen and the whole dog.

I think I paid $35 to get my dog chipped. In st. paul its also mandatory if you want the life time city license which is like $30 instead of $10 per year.

well, tuesday, my pup is gettin chipped. at my vet its 45 bucks for the chip, setup, registration, and that includes a year of insurance on the dog for surgery or what not. figured what the heck, its only 45 bucks.

even if it was 200 bucks, i guess i'd still consider it considering the bond i have with her.

I had my 13 year old lab chipped when he was a puppy. The plan was to get him socialized and some manners in him for 6 or 8 months, then a 8 month session of training on the road. A dogs appearance can change alot in 8-12 months if you dont see him. This allowed me some confidence that I got back the same dog I sent off for training.

After the vet trip a couple days ago, we learned through Dr. Smith's office in burnsville, that there is a microchip clinic coming up in April.

$38 gets your dog chipped. Thats cheap, from what I've seen. (actually now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not certain if I remember the price 100%. But it was less than $50 by a fair amount.)

Had my pup chipped the other day when she was at the vet for her rabies shot. The vet said they prefer chipping when they come in for spay or neuter. But I said I didn't know for sure if she was gonna be spayed right away, and I wanted her chipped now. Their concern is the size of the needle. Well, jaedyn was a good girl and never even flinched!!
