SimpleMan
Hey guys, I am looking for a good crankbait rod. Looking to spend anywhere from $90-120. I've been reading some threads about glass, graphite, and both materials in the rod. I think I would be looking for either all graphite or a mix of the materials. What are your preferences? TurnUpTheFishing
Id look into either the St. Croix Mojo crankbait rod 7' MH moderate action or the Shimano Compre crankbait series rod in MH.
Larson15
Shimano Compre TC4 would be my pick
Bass Whacker
got a shimano TC4 last year and loved it. that would be my choice for sure
Hula_Grub
I got my carrot stix cranking rod from Thorne Bros. last year at the NE sports show for $100. Usually they're $150.
mozy
Cabela's has St. Croix Avids on sale for $149. The Compre would also be a good choice.
Cecil
7' MHM croix avid or mojo.
bemidjibasser
To me, it depends on what type of crankbaits you are going to throw. Shallow baits like a baby 1 minus or dt1 to dt6 and others in this range a 7' medium moderate action is what I prefer. Deeper baits like DT10's and such up to DT20's I would go with at least a 7' mhm on up to an 8'hm depending on the cover you are fishing. St. Croix's in Avid would be my first choice in your price range.
Daze Off
I just bought a BPS Extreme Series Crankin' Stick and it feels awesome - have not thrown it yet of course but had two others in my hands for comparison - both St. Croix's a Mojo and a Premiere I believe and frankly the one I got felt better than either of the others. That said, I held the new Carrot Sticks with the micro-guides and would have bought that one in a heartbeat but did not have $200 to spend on a stick for throwning lighter cranks. I have an Extreme Series Crankin' Stick in 7' size for larger baits/deep runners. The new one is 6'6" M action. $69The Crankin’ Stick’s blank composition is a unique blend of IM6 graphite, fiberglass, and basalt fibers—yes, volcanic rock in its purest form, because of its ultra-high strength-to-weight ratio and incredible vibration resistance (you feel the bait working, not the rod). Result: the blank is now 20% lighter (it’s ridiculous how good this rod still feels after casting deep divers or double-blades all day), strong as heck, and incredibly sensitive due to the rock-solid stability of the basalt fibers
Deitz Dittrich
There are a lot of very decent crank rods for not a whole lot of money.. The biggest thing is you are looking for a rod with a slow curve to it. More so if fishing rocks, slightly stiffer if fishing weeds.. The BPS is a very good choice as stated above.. All mine however are Shimano TC4 rods.. however this year plan on getting one of the new Reaction Cumara...
Cecil
I would look at the quantum kvd rods as well
st.crioxfishin
Anyone ever try the st. croix premier glasss cranking rods? Never used one, any opinions?
dudewheresmyboat
DD, when will you be testing the Cumara Reactions? I'm looking to buying a few for this up coming season.
Deitz Dittrich
DD, when will you be testing the Cumara Reactions? I'm looking to buying a few for this up coming season. Dude-when WI season opens is when it will probably get its first test.. i may run down to the river before then, but cant be sure. I have decided which one I am getting though.. THe 7'7"M action.. I am going to use it for deeper cranks and big ole spinnerbaits. Going to pair it up with the 5-1 gear Curado. I was very interested in the 7' 11" but after holding it, decided I liked the feel of the 7'7".. just my own person pref I would think..
Irish
Do you guys think I could get away with throwing DT10 every once and a while with a 7'm rod? I know it is a bit light but...
Deitz Dittrich
Irish, I dont see why not. It may not be the best rod, but you can do whatever you want and I'm sure it will work just fine.
polarsusd81
I use a 7'-0" M glass rod and throw DT-10 and DT-16 on it all the time. Love it.
Wayne Ek
St.crioxfishin, I have 2 of them. One I had Mike Daloia replace the handle, with a longer handle and the other is just the way I purchased it. I like the one with the longer handle one better, but both are good sticks. I have a Quantum Paul E. cranking rod that is really great for small cranks and a KVD cranking rod that is my go to cranking rod. The Premier rods are really good rods and have held up very well considering the hard use they get from me and clients.
sicheneder
i have a the 6'6" premier glass rod and it is a little bit more of a heavier rod blank action than other glass rods i have tried(american rodsmiths david fritts rods and old team dawia s rods and quantum kvd). i always liked it for ripping coontail and weeds in the fall, but i am a glass crankin' fan(at least more than the avid crankin rod i purchased last year). the tip is not as whimpy as most crankin rods.at least st croix rods are at most retailers in this region so you can try it out at least against some of the others. Larson15
Another rod that I am a huge fan of and might be my next cranking rod is the Fenwick elite tech crankshaft. Its a little pricey but I love the action of this rod. Half of the rod is graphite and the other half is glass.Another rod I am going to look at is the lamiglass excell Glass cranking rod. Its priced right at 100 dollars.
Irish
Has anyone tried the new Cumara Reactions from Shimano? I'm really intrested in those.
Deitz Dittrich
Ive held them, put a reel on them.. but have not cast it yet..
Craigums
DD, Being the shimano guy are you going to try one of those cumulus (sp?) rods? Not sure how much improvement they could have gotten over the cumara
Deitz Dittrich
yes sir, I have 2 on order and should have them mid month.. I will give my review when I have them in hand.. The biggest thing, it sounds like the blank is not made anywhere near the same.. The Cumara is an IM blank.. using many IM Graphite.. from what I am to understand the Cumulus is a HM Graphite and has more resins than the Cumara.. thus lighter and stronger. Time will tell. Larson15
I was thinking that they will be very similar to a G Loomis IMX/GLX blank.
