Boiling Ice Water

Has anyone ever drilled a hole thruogh the ice and seen what's in the attached video? What would cause these large bubbles to come up. It looked like a pot of boiling water and it lasted for about 5 minutes.

I'm guessing it's air bubbles that travel along the bottom of the ice and finally have a place to escape when you drill a hole.

Could have possibly drilled over a spring. I've seen that happen before, but not that extreme.

I had bubbles coming up some holes last week after the rains and I attributed them to springs. I could actually see them on the locator coming from the bottom all the way up. I fished the same spot this past weekend w/o the phenomenom so that is why I think the rains had something to do with it in my case??

i agree with JB. I think you must of hit a big air pocket under the ice. That's a lot of air. If its coming from the bottom you must have set up at just the right spot and at the right time for something weird to happen.

A underwater camera looking up would help confirm it is a large pocket traveling slowly along the bottom of the ice. Seen this a lot over the years, can get extreme at times when a vehicle pass's and rolls a huge bubble into the hole...turns into a Blow Hole...WHOSH! That gets your attention preaty darn quickly!

You can get pockets of hydrogen sulfide forming under the ice-sheet from the sediment and decaying vegetation. With the warm/cold snap we just had, I wouldn't be surprised that there was more lake turnover (Koon's pretty weedy too, if I remember right) and more gases released.

Lots of air pockets are released when the ice fractures, you must've nailed a doozy of a pocket -- or like the others said, over a spring in the lake. The ice would be thinner around the spring, too.

if that gas was h2s i would it would smell like rotten eggs, my guess is it was methane.

Maybe stay away a few feet though!!!

I saw that done on a documentary about permafrost lakes in Siberia. They had a real flamethrower for a minute or two when they threw a match in the hole.

You get bubbles like that when you're duck hunting and setting out the dekes while walking in the muck. Maybe a change in barometric pressure started the release. If it was a spring wouldn't the ice be thin there?

Muskrats and beaver can leave a lot of bubbles under the ice too.
