Which lake in MN holds the largest Lakers?

Burntside gets a lot of coverage so it looks that way. And I can't name another with a grain of expertise since I've only fished B-side in the States (Ontario was fun), but I would go with Gunflint or even the upper reaches of LOW.

What lake would you say holds the largest Lake Trout in Minnesota, not counting Superior? From the pictures I've seen lately, I would think it would be Burntside? wink

Pictures don't show the whole picture, Steve. smilesmile

I guess I wouldn't be surprised if Burntside holds the largest lake trout in Minnesota inland waters, but I'd bet some of those BWCAW lakes that are a lot less pressured will give better odds of yielding a monster. For that matter, I don't doubt at all the Trout Lake (wholly within the BWCAW) off Vermilion, though numbers suffered for some years until it started to recover, holds some true monsters.

Man, this is just like fishing. I know it wouldn't take long to catch Wanderer and you on this one! laugh Now all we need is Duffman to give us some BWCAW ideas! wink What about Sag?

Lac La Croix would be my first choice because of it's size but there are quite a few good lakes in the BWCA like Topaz and Cyprus plus there's a number of others across the state. Do a little research on the dnr web site.

The biggest lake trout to come out of gunflint lake is about 30 or so pounds. I'd be willing to bet that's the unofficial inland state record as well. The picture I've seen of it (at gunflint lodge) says it was caught in 1929 however. With it's size and depth, and the fact half of it is in canada I'm sure it still has the biggest laker swimming around in there.

Large deep, plenty of native forage, that receives little pressure to start with. Some Lake Trout lakes have all that but are notorious to produce small Lake Trout. So genetics plays a large roll as well. It is also a matter of how those trout have evolved in that lake over the years. Bigger isn't necessarily better it is just how things played out evolution wise for that lake.

Even lakes that are know to put out large Lake Trout don't give them up that often. Average size trout for the lake is what we end up with.

You knew Tracy and I would be in an aggressive feeding mode the evening before the full moon, and would be likely to strike at whatever lure you were trolling. We're a lot easier to pattern than lake trout are. gringringrin

Sag is one good option. Large, very deep, good average size, from the reports/pics I've seen. Frankly, I don't think either Burntside or Gunflint holds the largest laker in inland Minnesota waters. There are too many other good laker lakes, some well known and many not so widely talked about or pressured (especially in the BWCAW).

What I wonder is how many 30+ pound lakers are REALLY swimming in all/any of those lakes. So many realistic opportunities for 20+ lb fish that it makes your head spin.

Lac La Croix. Nothing else is even close. I know personally of several fish over 30 pounds that came out of there. Some were quite a bit larger than 30#.

This reminds me of last year's discussion in the Duluth board.

Not to say other lakes on the Border and in the BW don't hold big fish, because I know they do. We tangled with one up there last summer for a half hour without gaining any line before it shook the hook.

What he said.

In the BW, I would think that any one of those large deep lakes on the east end could have the largest. As well as the lakes mentioned on the west end. Forage is key, a lake that I fished off of Seagull just had cookie-cutter 18"ers. They were surface feeding on a bug hatch, and I think that was a main part of their diet.

Steve,

I have always dreamed of taking a Dog sled ride back in on some of those BWCA lakes, but the costs are out of my ball park for a team and Guide. frown

Get your RABC and La Croix can be fished from the Canadian side, accessible by snowmobile.

I there are a couple lakes in the b-dub that are for sure going to have some monsters. Im thinking Knife, Kekekabic and some of the others in that area have got to be holding a true beast. Lac la Croix would be a excellent bet too.

Its hard to say about the lakes outside of the bdub. I have hooked into fish on B-side that ruined me on gear that I handled 15lbers on. I'm sure there are a few real monsters in there with all of the forage but they are smart and there is lot of places for them to lurk.

Good topics have a way of popping back up, don't they? Cool that it's out in the main ice fishing board this time, where a lot more folks will get a look at it. Who knows who might become addicted to fishing for the biggest thrill under the ice, just by looking at this thread? smilesmile

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
