Son's birthday

My son's birthday is coming up and he wants his own icefishing stuff. What would you recommend getting him? I was going to get a 5 gallon bucket and put a rod, depth finder, tackle box, and tip up in it. Any other ideas? Keep in mind he is going to be 6.

Sounds like a very good start.. i would also put in a few "Coupons" for up coming fishing trips.. Couple of ice buster bobbers might not be a bad idea.. maybe a couple "Coupons" for bait as well so he can have his own bait on a few trips?

How about a lifetime license , maybe a fishing magazine just for the pictures at this time. Make sure to keep the trips short and take some favorite snacks. HAVE FUN!! and take alot of pictures.

sounds like you have a great pick, maybe a giftcard to cabelas or scheels depending on where you are then you both can pick out some jigs together

Yes at the grand old age of 6 he should be getting a Sno Bear so he can fish in comfort and have a place to entertain the ladies while sipping kool aide and hot chocolate .

Toss in a nerf football. I remember there was ONE TIME I took my young guys out and the fish were not cooperating.

My 5yo loves to go shopping for lures/jigs. So as suggested above, a Gift Card, or just a trip to the store to pick out own.

My son has his own jig box, jigs, own rod, mini-chair (more comfy than 5 gal bucket), own ice-skimmer (he loves to clear the holes after I drill them).

Be sure to take him to the Ice Fishing Show if you can (should be Dec '10)

If you walk out on the ice, maybe his own sled to tow his own gear.

+1 on the Nerf Football and the sled ideas. There are tons of ways that you can make this the best time of his life without breaking the bank. In the end he's going to remember the time that you spend with him much more than the stuff that you buy him.

I didn't see any age, But I like to use the sit-n-store to put on the 5gal pail to store all your tackle and extra hand warmers

I would go with the gift card. I just took mine out shopping today for a trip next week, and he thought it was cool to pick out his own stuff.
