Garmin LakeMaster Questions

Anyone use this software...I can only use the CD-Rom version so if you use this please help me. First off is it good? When trying to get info, the service tech at Garmin had no answers for me and when I read a thread on here some people had info but would like to get more. How many lakes show contours of 5 feet or less? Cableas site says detailed maps of 72 lakes with general coverage of 657 lakes....what does that mean? only 72 lakes have depth contours or 657? Garmin site states detailed coverage of over 3,500 lakes????? I could care less about detail shore line coverage and pretty much interested in just depth contours. Just an FYI, I did search garmin HSOforum and viewed the lakes it claims to have on the CD but doesn't tell you if there lakes with contours or just detailed shore lines. No other softerware like navionics will work cause I need to download from CD as my unit (Dakota 10) only has internal memery (850MB)

Here's what I know about it.

The 72 lakes with "detailed" maps are HD lakes. Meaning they are in 1' contours. Those are the best maps you can get IMO.

The rest of the 657 are lakes are covered with general lakemaster maps. Those are pretty much just dnr survey maps.

If I'm correct the rest of the 3500 are garmin lake maps. Im not 100% sure if they are all contoured but I think that they are the same as the ones they have on their inland lakes coverage. Check out the inland lakes to see the coverage.

Your best bet to get a hold of Garmin is to email them. Everything I have ever had to ask them was answered well this way. On the phone its hard to say whos going to answer the phone and what they know.

It would be worth a shot to try calling lakemaster too. Since they are in state you got a good shot at talking to someone who really knows what they are talking about.

As far as the software being decent I cant say for sure as I haven't used it. I'm debating right now whether I want to get a card for my nuvi or the software.

I do have the mapsource topo24k software and its really decent. Easy to use and its fun to have the topo maps on my computer. Its also nice to have the ability to backup and manage waypoints.

From what I understand the garmin lakemaster software is the same thing as the topo stuff, but with lake contours, road data, but no topo data. If thats the case it will be very nice.

I have the CD rom version... I suggest going with that rather than the chip if you can, because it comes with software allowing you to view the maps on your computer and plan out where you want to go.

I have no complaints about it... Just about every lake I go to has contours and the road detail is great.

The reason Garmin tech support / HSOforum can't help is because they just sell the chips and the disks... Contact LakeMaster with questions.

In the latest version, there are 180 of the "most popular" lakes with 1 foot or 3 foot contours and another 600 or so with 5 foot contours. The other 2700 lakes they talk about just show shoreline.

Go to the lakemaster HSOforum, click on support, then click on product lake lists. Go to the garmin section and click on Minnesota. It should bring up a .pdf with all the lakes that have contours.

I have the new Lakemaster for Garmin and most (99%) of the lakes have at least 5FT contours. There are only a few of the 3500 lakes that only show shoreline. Look at the PDF that is on the Lakemaster HSOforum.

Got a follow up email from them.... Here is info on Garmin lakemasters CD....

Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. The LakeMaster CD offers 5 foot

contours for over 3500 lakes. Many are covered by 1 foot contours and the rest

with 5 foot contours. On the LakeMaster Minnesota page on our HSOforum there is

a link to our lakelist for Minnesota so you can view all of the lakes with

contour coverage and those that are just covered by detailed shoreline. That is

the best way to determine if the data we offer will meet your needs.

LakeMaster Minnesota (lake list on left side of page) - https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=254&pID=1113

The Dakota 10 has 850MB of internal memory for storing map data. The LakeMaster

Minnesota CD is 135MB is size so you can easily fit the entire product on your

GPS 10 if you wish to.

Please let me know if you have any further questions and thank you for your

interest in Garmin.

Regards,

Nathan

There you go! They always have great support when you email them.

Question for the guys who have the Garmin lakemaster cd-rom. Where did you get it? I am having a hard time finding a place that has them in store. It would be nice to pick it up and use it the same day vs. ordering online and waiting for it to be shipped.

Thanks for the info here guys.

I think I prefer getting the Garmin Lakemaster mapsource cd rom instead of the sd card as well.

If I can look at the maps on my pc and have the same benefits as the sd card that would be great.

Would I be able to load the maps on both of my garmin gps's?

I don't believe you have to wait for shipping. I haven't visited the site for a while but if memory serves me correctly, you can buy a downloadable version that you can download direcly to you PC. The only problem is that you won't have it backed up on a CD.

Call them and see if there's some way to create your own CD backup copy.

No you will not be able to use the cd maps on more than one GPS unit. You have to unlock the cd to a single GPS.

Mine came with the option of two unlock codes so I can map it to two different GPS units. What I wasn't happy about was additional unlock codes cost as much as the software to begin with.

There are probably different advantages and disadvantages to each version. I have been considering upgrading to a GPSMap76Csx. Since I don't have an SD card reader in my Rino120, I have some questioned I'd have to answer first.

For example:

If I buy a new GPS with a card reader, would I be able to download map data from PC version (CD-ROM) to that unit's resident memory? If not, could I write map data to an SD card so I can use it in the new GPS or would I be forced to buy the Lakemaster on the SD card?

I'd have to call them with my questions to make sure I don't create a compatibility problem.

I have the 09 Lake master Minn cd/rom ,,all the lakes I fish around Duluth and north of here have the 1ft contours ,,,Lake Superior is in 3 ft contours

I had several emails with Nathan from Garmin and I was given 2 unlock codes with my cd and a free 2010 upgrade due to the hassle I had with my 172c ,,,the 172 didnt have the capacity to handle all the info thats on the 09 data card so the cdrom was my only option ,,,the garmin compatibility chart was modified after the ordeal I had with garmin but their customer service is top notch

when you do use the cdrom version you have to get either a blank SD or Data card to load the maps on

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
