Insulated Shelter --> Frabill or Canvas Craft

Looking to get one of those really nice insulated shelters sometime this winter. I have narrowed it down, for the most part to the frabill and canvas craft shelters withe the thinsulate insulation. I am looking for a big two many that I can pull behind my ATV, so weight isn't an issue (I have my little otter for the solo trips).

Here is what I have noticed, tell me if I am off.

Canvas craft: nice bright inside, heavy duty stitching, Otter tub/seats/accessories. The tubing looked a little flimsy and weak compared to my Otter, and all the other shelters I have been inside of. No windows on the sides, just those big vents. Less expensive

Frabill: Impressed, compared to where they were a couple years ago. Thought the tub looked durable, and everything seemed well thought out. The fabric didnt seem as thick as the CC, tubing looked awesome and built well. Seats were comfy, zips open in the back, windows and vents.

Thoughts on which one I should go with, or what I need to be aware of. Owners opinions appreciated.

I have an Canvas Craft and as far as I am concerned, the poles are very strong. I also have a 4 man and it has been towed all over and never once has any of the poles been an issues.

As with many portables, the windows crack. The CC house has a front and back window and the fabric vent in the sides. Plenty of light and I can see out the side vents.

Great house and very well built from one end to the other and I have no concerns with the poles from the use I have put into them. I think they are a very nice pole and go up and down as simple and as smooth as any pole system out there.

canvas craft comes with the otter sled. i have been dragging the same otter magnum for almost 10 years without the hyfax kit and no problems. my friend has the other brand you mentioned he got late last year and he was filling the bottom where it wore through and putting a hyfax kit on hopeing to get through the season

Canvas Craft's poles are galvanized steel, not aluminum. CC doesn't believe in re-inventing components that have been tried and proven to last. The poles fit a little looser than competitors but you'll never have any binding. If you really would like windows on the sides instead of vents, custom work is what Canvas Craft is all about.

I dont know if frabill has the white interior, I tell you it is a major plus!

I fished out of my buds dark interior the last few times I went out being spoiled with the white interior just couldn't get use to it. Took my CC Northlander out today and man I thought I was still outside and it was 50 degrees outside and that was with me shutting the heater on and off because low was still to much, I guess that's understandable it was 0 out with no clouds in the sky. I did kick er up to medium back to low and back when the sun went down.

look for the post in the ice fishing forum that was started by mnhunter79. the post will have the subject line "help with new fish house". In that post I broke down the cost of both the frabill and the canvas craft. hope this helps.

Both very good, the biggest points to consider in comparison is the frame and venting theory that is applied.

I personally believe the 1.25" modular aluminum frame now used by Frabill is the smartest out...it is virtually imposable to Tweak the frame out of square, as the independent corner buckle system absorbs the shock and prevents this. The Frabill Max Venting system and removable Velcro windows for me are also huge plus's. The new Roto Molded sleds, are very durable and deep.

I checked out the new frabill shacks as i to will be getting an insulated porty, i'v only seen the C.C. online it also looks great, but when it comes time(tax return) i'll be searching fo the frabill, the new sleds are as nice as the otter and the tubes worked flawlessly(indoors), i like the windows, i like the vents, one nice porty. As stated above Frabill has come a long way. A couple years ago i wouldent even have concidered buying one, now i'm just waiting for rhe check.

The biggest question I have is the durability of the tubs. Are they comparable to the Otter tub, and will it last season after season of being towed around the lake.

Does Canvas Craft have the Frabill in their showroom? I would love to go sit in them side by side.

That is the older model of the R2Tec, I don't think it uses the same sled as the current model (black/gray). Frabil had a cutaway of the current sled at the ice fishing show, it was about 5/16" thick on the bottom. I would put this house up against any otter, don't drink the koolaid, go with the Frabil.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
