Keeping feet off the ice in portable

PK3

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what people are using in portables to keep the boots off the ice. Carpet remnant (does it freeze to the ice), styrofoam (noise issue), wood (portability issue).

thanks in advance.

it is an otter lodge. I would like to cover the length of the house with one piece if possible rather than two or three pieces???

edit-not the whole floor but out from tub about 1.5 ft.

Someone had talked about putting down the rubber stress mat that a lot of people stand on if they stand a lot at work. You can get them at most of the big name hardware places and they roll right up. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good idea.

I have a hub style shack and I just throw down a carpet sample in front of me to keep my feet off the ice. It makes a difference just to have your feet off the ground and I dont want to carry anything heavy with. You can pick them up at most carpet stores for a buck.

I bought a package of those snap together rubber mats (They look like they have diamond plate on them). There's like 4 to a package. In my one man shack I cut one down and use that. I use two of them in my 2 man flaip over. They're light an don't absorb water. They don't freeze and you can fold them up for transfer.

I think these work well, I also put some on the floor of my porty to try and help with the shock to my gear when running across the lake. There is a store that sells a lot of tools, trailer and other stuff that have them right now for about $6.99 for a bag of them. wink

That's what I got ... not the little ones from Northern ... mine are 2ft sq. from Walmart (for home-gym) ... didn't think much of 'em when I first got 'em ... but once we were out on the ice, they were worth their weight in gold (they actually don't weigh very much).

I recommend using Winter car floor matts. The ones for the back seats (~1x2 ft). They have the raised ridges so water drains down off the surface so doesn't get slippery, and the bottom side has small rubber cleats so it won't slip around on the ice as bad.

Works perfectly to rest your feed on and perfect width to fit between your seat and your hole. Used them with my Otter Lodge couple days ago, worked great! stores easily on the bottom of the sled, and doubles as extra cushoning for more fragile items.

i customized my otter with a bench type seat that is set back in the tub so your feet are either in the tub or resting on the top edge of the tub. i have a piece of carpet in the bottom of my tub. i used black pipe for the frame and upolstered the seats myself. there is a seat and backrest that are hinged so it will lay flat for transport. i put the auger across the seat and bungie it to the black pipe. the only hitch is a standard cover will not fit, you also have to customize the cover. no problem with that, blue tarp and 2 6ft bungies. the seat is set high enough so 5gal buckets fit under it. if you have the seats that otter sells, just look at all the room behind you, wasted space if you ask me.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
