Stuck Auger Extension

Recommended Posts

I used an auger extension on LOW last year and did not take it off during the off season. Now it is stuck on. What suggestions do you have to get it off? I have tried to pry it with a cat's paw and soaked it is WD40. Any other ideas?

What bolt? Is there a bolt that I need to remove? I hope not, because then I would feel dumb for not checking there first.

Isn't there two bolts used with an extension, one at the top and the bottom. Just don't bang on the shaft up and down to much as you could damage the gears and seal inside the housing.

Sorry....I forgot to type with font Sans Sarcasm.

I think I just need to warm it up. I did take both bolts out and tried pulling it, prying it, tapping it, and soaking it in wd 40. Thanks for the input though.

I got a few goofy looks yesterday on the lake when most guys are worried about there being enough ice and I'm prepared to cut through 4 feet of it.

chuck that sucker up in a vice the best you can and use a big vice grip or pipe wrench to try and turn it.

I made an extension for my rommates auger last year and I made sure to put wrench flats on it. Not hard to add after the fact either.

I would find a good penetrating lubricant, WD40 is alright, but there are better. Be Careful with the heat around the gear box, be careful on how much you beat on the shaft. If you are going to heat something up, make sure you are heating up the female side of the coupler. Something i have also done, when i know it is not stuck too bad is that i will take the bolt out and fire it up and drill a hole til it breaks free (be careful not to loose your auger if you make it through, i would do this with a bunch of ice and it would come loose within the first couple turns).

Be SURE the mounting bolts are out, take it out on the ice over SHALLOW (<2')of water and drill till it comes off. The twisting action should break the rust and if you've been soaking it, that should help all the more. If you're in a BIG hurry, take it out over water that's too deep to retreive the auger, that's practically a guaranteed way of having it come off fast. (JK wink ) I'd hate to see you crystalize or bow the metal of the auger shaft from overheating it or worse yet, damage your gearcase from the heating, hammering, and prying. Phred52
