bgreen82
is there any use for it during the ice season? we caught a bunch this summer to use on channel cats, but have a couple bags left over, and im not gonna save it for next year. is there anything i can use it for? i thought maybe cut bodies under a tipup or the heads on a jigging spoon. would these be wastes of time? waterbound
I've had good success using frozen smelt and suckers under tip-ups for pike so I imagine you could have some pretty good luck with shad too.
JigginIsLife
dont know if its a stupid idea but what about salt too, ??? im not sure really not a slime chaser.

JBMasterAngler
Cut them up and use them for icing cats and/or walleyes...or lake trout.

JimBuck
First ice and Ice out would be a good time to utilize dead/cut bait. Keep em' around and give it a shot. I've done well with them before.
ec30_06
I have used them for pike on a quick strike rig with good results
Ed Carlson
Shad and or Goldeye can make great pike bait. Muskies also go for Golgeye/Mooneye and I have had some great results on Wind less Tip-ups with them. They do not store well long term frozen, unless you vacuum pack them. For this reason I do not stock up on Goldeye or Mooneye in the winter for spring use or visa-verse. Plenty to catch all year around and I have fun fishing Goldeye/Mooneye under the ice, even for C&R fishing..they are a Hoot on light tackle. They go crazy for #3 Chubby Darters, slash and burn, the big Sumeye's hit hard too.
bgreen82
they were caught out of the vermillion and were vaccuum packed. i just never hear anyone talk about using them for any of these apps. i will definitely try them along with live shiners my first time out with tipups. Ed Carlson
A tip is when you go to use them, Scale them. This releases new fresh oils from under the scales into the water...Gators like it.
mn_bowhunter
Is there anywhere else in the regs saying what is legal to use as bait? Shad do not fall under the minnow definition, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something?
waterbound
As long as the regulations don't say something can't be used for bait, you should be fine using it. Cheese, corn and hot dogs don't necessarily fall under traditional definitions of bait but they are all legal to use.
Ed Carlson
Is there anywhere else in the regs saying what is legal to use as bait? Shad do not fall under the minnow definition, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something? The way we interpret it is they can not be used alive or transported alive. Frozen and/or preserved for transport and use, your good.
waterbound
I would imagine it is legal to use live shad as bait if you used them in the same system they were caught in. I believe on Grindstone you can catch smelt and use them as live bait, but they must be dead if they are used elsewhere.
