Handheld GPS?

I know it is popular, but is there really not another viable cheap option that has been released in the last 2 years? That H2O isn't a bad choice, but there have to be over a dozen new GPSr's out there, and the prices keep coming down as the options keep improving. Garmin alone has a whole new line of touchscreen GPSr's that accept LM chips for less that $400.

And this is coming from a guy that has a 5 yr old Garmin Legend w/o card acceptance.

I still think the H2Oc with a LakeMaster or Nav card (or both cards) is the best option -- you get the biggest variety of the best contour maps that are out there, you get great performance, and the price is right. Our prices are $323 for the H2Oc with LakeMaster card or $360 for H2Oc with Nav card.

Garmin makes great GPS units with lots of features and functions and maps you can add (at a price) --- but if you're looking for a handheld GPS for fishing I still give my vote to the H2Oc.

I agree with PerchJerker. There has been some interesting stuff that has come out but the h20 series is still the best choice for fishing.

Im not 100% sure but I think the h20c has a faster processer and more channels than the black and white h20. I think thats where part of the extra cost goes. Compared to my old etrex vista my h2oc is much faster refreshing, panning, and loading up on turn on.

Garmin has some interesting stuff out there for sure, I just got a nuvi 500 and its pretty sweet. It accepts cards and lakemaster will run on it. That being said, the h2o still goes out in the boat with me. Its just easier than a touchscreen for fishing.

Those are pretty good prices with a card from PerchJerker too. Kinda hard to beat that.

Great prices from PerchJerker.

One note on the NAV chip for the H20's. The coverage of 5 states is a nice feature and so is the additional HD lakes - BUT it only zooms down to 1/8th of a mile, disappointing from an ice fishing standpoint. It also has very slow refresh when scrolling around the maps mannually. I wish they would address both of these items frown

The Lakemaster zoom is much better and so is the scrolling refresh performance.

I'm sure you're both right but comparing the H2Oc to the NUVI is hardly a fair comparison. The NUVI is not a handheld but is designed for inside your car.

Compare the H2Oc to the GPSMap76Csx if you want to compare quality, price, features, accuracy, acquisition speed, etc.

The nuvi 500 is pretty much the same idea as the XOG but it works better...I used it grouse hunting and it worked great for that. The nuvi is faster, as durable, waterproof and has more features than the H2Oc for sure. That gpsmap76csx would be more comparable for sure.

I was more or less comparing the touchscreen to the old school buttons. Thats what they seem to be going to these days.

I am also looking into a Nuvi 500 as it seems to be an alternative to Lowrance's XOG, and it is on-sale at Amazon for $199.99. That, plus the $107 for the 2009 LM chip is less than an H2O w/ the chip, and you also have a respectable in-car nav!

I would check out what lakemaster says for compatability. They might work. The 500/550 have a switchable mode to change it from car nav to walking. It pretty much turns in into a normal handheld. Not really sure if the others do that. The other thing is that the 500/550 is waterproof.

Im not 100% sure what the difference was with the 550 to the 500. I think there was something with the basemap that was odd. Either way nobody had the 550 when I was looking for it.

I got mine at rei. They did have them at cabelas but im not sure about GM. The service I got a cabelas was terrible so I went to rei and got it.

McGurk, thats a really good price. I paid a lot more for it than that even with the rei club discount.

Hey Deadeye, the difference between the 500 and the 550 is the pre-loaded basemap, one has a cont-48 state Topo map, and the other has a USA-Canada basemap. Otherwise they seem to be identical, and usually priced about the same.

Question for you as a nuvi 500 owner: Does it have a track/trail/breadcrumb feature? That is one of the things I like best about handhelds, and I am not about to give that up. Otherwise, I like what it has to offer

Take some time to shop a bit... H20 is nice... My brother has one... The only negative... I think the electronics inside are a bit behind... If you load the newest Lakemaster Lake of the woods chip the refresh rates are slow. I have the Garmin 400i. This has all the Preloaded US Inland Lake Maps. I can run the unit as is with all the preloads and any of the new Lakemaster SD chips and the refresh is quick. I also see more options on viewing detail compared to my bros H20. I also like the Rock 'n Roller input wheel interface over the H20

All good. Don't mean to knock the H20. I'd take a look at all the options. There is a reason so many on this forum use H20.

Colorado are getting cheaper as the price is coming down due to Garmin pushing the new Oregon (touch screen)

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
