Go Hunt, The Rut is on!

Recommended Posts

Just to let you all know that after a slow opener weekend (at least in our area) Today (11-10) the rut is ON!!! Was out in the woods this morning and never saw so many deer. The bucks where out chasing the does in full force and didn't care how much noise or who was around...like shooting fish in a barrel!!

people asking...I hunt just north of Aitkin

Sorry frosty, but they aren't in there very good. Too wet, to the north too much possibly still standing corn. I have 0 rubs or scrapes for the first time since 1969. To our east is all wheat or oats, my uncle C has no fields of anything, the deer left for greener pastures this year. They have zero reason to be by us. The does aren't in there and I bet the bucks aren't too far from where the doeheads are. I had 4 yearling bucks on my trailcam this year, no 2 1/2 and up. Too mild for wet swamp hunting, but you never know, 1 could show up anytime. My uncles in the leaf river bottom had a huge day yesterday, bucks moving all day for some reason. They connected on a couple hogs, biggest was 10 points and 221 dressed.

Yes pulleye, I heard the same. Out of the 6 guys I know that hunted yesterday they all saw multiple bucks at odd hours, 5 of the 6 guys bagged a mature one. Happens every year, a day no different to us is totally different to them. Less pressure mid week plus the rut and lack of first weekend rutting behavior. Timing is everything. Friends farm saw 5 deer for 5 people the first three days. Yesterday 2 people and they saw 23 deer with 4 bucks shooting 2 good ones. It was 3 days of depression followed by 11 hours of craziness.

Opener @ 3:30pm grunted in a monster that was 100 yards out on the edge of a slashing, smart guy. Disappeared then ten minutes later crashed through at seventy yards right on a mature doe. He grunted half a dozen times in the process. They then doubled back at ninety yards with the buck being five feet from the money. Grunting all the way. BC

Once again, it all depends on where your at. The rut takes place at different times in different areas, and with different deer. NO doubt the rut probably is in effect almost everywhere, but last weekend I saw no bucks chasing does where I hunt, and havent gotten any word from the family members that are up there this week on a change. That is really cool that your area is HOT though! Wish my areas would heat up a little more. It seemed like the rut wasn't even started where I was up north last weekend.

Had a nice 8 point cruise by at 9:15 this morning, tried grunting but with the wind it took the rattle bag to get his attention. He came looking but ended up downwind and busted me. Not bad for the first time in a treestand this year though.

Last night in Duluth the deer were on the move. Shot a doe from my stand at dusk and then got kind of spooked by a buck who came in to some scrapes and wouldn't leave. Deer were crashing everywhere on my way out. The drive home was a mix of shining eyeballs and does trotting across the road. A nice buck stopped traffic. My wife saw 15 on her way home.
