Questionable Hunters

Musky Buck

Recommended Posts

Ever get something like this. Opening of bow season, we've had a real trophy buck coming out on schedule almost every night and had couple bowhunters say they wounded a deer and it ran into my creek bottom area, I said now you're tracking it at 6:00 at night? I said from the road scouting lately you noticed that huge buck in our field and want to set up shop on him ? They looked at each other and knew I was 1 step ahead of them. And right on time, the big boy showed up opening night as the same vehicle was out on the county road watching him.

what a jerk. I had a guy screw up hunting saturday morning for my uncle. came out after sunrise and set up his stand and all that. Didn't see anything after an hour then left. My uncle was in the stand at 5:25 am and had trail camera showing only morning movement. Sunday night saw the vehicle in the field with lights on. Snuck up on him and saw he had a deer killed. small 3 pointer. Sucks he shot it but nothing we can do now.

Good story Musky, that was actually somewhat clever of them to try and "track" their deer just before the buck enters your field, way to stay one step ahead of them. You could have also offered to help them track, I bet that blood trail would have gone cold real fast.

I used to hunt on a property where the neighbor would try that [PoorWordUsage]. During gun season "some how" their deer always crossed the property line. After a while we realized he showed us the same piece of bone over a three year period for "three different deer" in order to gain access to the property.

We have some public land that buts up to the edge of our property on one side. Every year hunters will drive down the logging road to our property line gate, and sit along the "edge" of our property.

Well, they used to not obey the edge rule, that all changed when one day, at the young age of 14, I walked to our property line and found a truck parked in the normal spot right at our gate.

This time, they had left their breakfast wrappers and garbage laying all around their truck, went the the bathroom "number 2," then proceeded to cross into our property for a morning hunt. I could tell they were hunting our property by the tracks they left in the snow.

Let's just say their own "number 2" was spread all over their door handles and windshield when they returned.

It's strange, but we have not had another problem since that day...wonder why?

We had some new neighbors put up a tower stand right on the edge of our property where 2 of our road make a "T" intersection, then the guy had the balls to yell at me for driving on my own land. I was just a kid at the time and didn't want to get into anything with him so I just went back to our building and informed my Dad of the situation. He said just to stay away from that area for the rest of the day. That night he drove over to the neighbors and had a nice talk with them, told them they could hunt our land if they wanted to, but for a fee. The guy with the stand claimed he wasn't hunting on our land and wouldn't pay anything. His attitude must not have sat well with the other members of his party, as my Dad received a very apologetic phone call the next Monday and was informed that the guy was a guest of theirs and will not be coming back. It just goes to show you, you never know who you will run into in the woods, even on your own land. But I learned a good lesson that it pays to not loose your temper or jump to conclusions. As the neighbors turned out to be some very nice ethical hunters and we have had good relations ever since.

Well here is the situation I have that I just found out this morning! I have my trail cam out in our own woods (6 acres)and it is surounded by some CRP corn and grass land and then there is about another 30 acres woods across the meadow. We have two access to our property off the main road. Have been having problems with trespassers for the last two years so we put gates up so they atleast have to walk instead of just driving out there. We I have been seeing TWO really nice bucks on my camara. There are a total of about 7-8 that I have showing up on pic's but two are nice, a really nice 8 (125-135 class) and one 6 point (no brow tines, 110-120 class). Well sometime in the last two days one got poached!!!! Any they cut the rack off and put it right next to the road. I have a really good idea who did this and I will be having a conversation with the local CO as I know him pretty well.

Sorry for the vent but my goal was to get our Bow hunting for them Sunday!!!!

Wow, I bet if all of us got together we could tell stories till no end. If I would've let these 2 go I bet one would have set up on each field end where he has to come out. You almost can set your watch to 7:30pm, that's when he surfaces. Ever since my dog was killed the deer really come for the acorns in the yard. Had 7 bucks last night in the yard, 2 are mature. I should say maturer than the rest. Had a guy shoot over our fence last year, but of course his story was he hit it in the plowed field then it jumped our fence and died. I'm actually scared to hunt my own ground. There's 65 acres of cover and 9 deer stands around it and I'm in the middle of it and these people use the tree-line and creek bottom as there back drop, I have heard bullets sizzling in there many times now and I can't for safety sake get down until it's pitch black to walk home because people sizzle bullets across my field and of course these stands are like 5 feet off the ground so they're shooting flat and not down. Talk to the people and it's well we shot at them on our land or whatever lie will do. It's bad closer to dark because they figure once quiet and dark they can get there deer and sneak for home. Some of these people stand in their yard and watch my field. It's really become a scary situation.

Musky,

Sounds like you and your neighbors don't get along very well at least when it comes to deer hunting....if it's really that bad and you own the woods line on the outside of the treeline make-up some "scare-crows" in full blaze orange and place a couple of them in full-view from the direction these guys might be shooting from...if they've got any scrupples they should at least not shoot in that direction when they can see a good amount of "orange" and what "might be" another hunter...make-em light enough so you can take them down and move them each day if needed....

I barely know my neighbors anymore, people have moved in and out and actually the people that own like 10 acres they let people on there relatives or whoever they are. Had like 10 deer in my field one night and the neighbor and his boy pounded out 2 clips at them and said they just couldn't resist, I said between you and your bullets my dad is in the creek bottom somewhere and your thrill to get a deer may kill someone one of these days. They said they wouldn't do that again but they have and it's just tough to watch it because I'd like to hunt myself. None of these people own more than 10 acres with zero deer ever on it until they come out of mine and walk the bare field edges and they don't care buck doe fawn they're firing.

Right on alwaysonthe, whether or not I'm fun I'd like to be alive so I can have fun, I have had 2 occasions with bullets coming within 20 feet of me and zero bullets should be sizzling into the property and at dark it gets tough to figure out where and who is firing when I'm taking cover under my stand. Then tell me why I have so many trespassers and people blasting rounds into where my dad and I walk? Why on my neighbor down the road do I find large piles of bait, why so many shoot before time and after. I'm just wondering always is this what hunting has become, it sure seems like it and it's gotten way worse and I can't imagine it ever getting better. I bought MY land to hunt it and paid huge dollars to do so, why do I owe it to MY neighbors to let them wail away, they have never done anything for me yet they're filling their freezer paying taxes on an acre of land and poaching deer off my property, poaching to harsh shooting deer on my land without permission. If you were a neighbor alwaysonthe would you ask permission before shooting across my field(s)? If so, we wouldn't have a problem. Thing is it isn't in a way the neighbors, it's the people related or not that sit in their yard and watch my field while they watch me walk into the creek bottom, then I bet they figure were good, he's gone till dark, shoot the deer, snow is rare, we'll go get em later, leave em lay. year in year out I've been on here for 9 months. alwaysonthe I wish you could walk in my shoes under the same situations for the past 10 years and make my land payments for me and you're right, I'll do better posts and dodge the lead this fall again.

So you have only been here January of 2009, how do you know what he posts year in and year out?

He has only been here posting for a year.

musky you should put up posted signs and trail cameras because when the walk over the land line they will have a picture snapped of them while they are trespassing and then you can call the dnr or police and report them as trespassing and you have proof that they are doing it to show the officer

Ive had a guy at 2am in the morning drive down a 200yd driveway shinning fields on both sides of him. My private property Needless to say his spot light woke me up out of a dead sleep and I meet him in the front yard with the shotgun. We exchanged a few not so kind words and I havent seen him since.

Musky sound like a mess, you may need to get the CO on speed dial and start prosecuting some of these tresspassers. If there are that many people shooting from the road I'd sure they wouldn't be hard to catch. I would also plant some trees along the road by your field, it may take a fews years for them to grow but they will help keep all the eyes, spotlights, scopes off your field down the road.

MB, it sounds to me like you have a lot of deer, enough land, and few fellow hunters. Have you thought about inviting some friends to hunt with you? Maybe line them up on the wood edges where you are having problems. I would think that would deter some of your neighbors from shooting into your woods. Also if they choose to hunt somewhere else while you have friends hunt the edges, their is the chance that they will find a new place to hunt that they prefer to hunt more than near you.

Good Luck!

i got one for you guys. ive had my stand in the same spot for 6 or 7 years. great spot ive shot a lot of deer out of it. its on the edge of our property line. about 4 years ago i had a bow hunter walk right up behind me on the neighbors property with now orange on during firearms season. then the next year they put a treestand 20 yards behind me on the nighbors property. i understand its not ours and they can do what they want but come on people have a little respect. then last year i walked out to my stand and he was sitin in it!!! [PoorWordUsage]??? he said he didnt know where the prop line was but then why is he huntin there? the next morning i was sitnin there and i herd a noise off to my left right at legal shooting hours i start gettin ready for a shot and then i see orange. he walks right in front of me 15 yards and waves right at legal hours and tresspass on our land. again [PoorWordUsage]?????

Great Idea Jameson, I would like to get my hunting mojo back and it is tough year after year now to just go through the same stuff over and over. My main concern is how buck feverish these once a year hunters are and it's really deer fever, when a deer comes out they completely lose their composure and do not care what lies behind the deer. I want to take my nephews out to give them some experience but I worry about their safety. I could sell it off and relocate, call the neighbors to ask who they let rifle hunt and or usually if I approach them from across the field they usually scamper for home. Hope you guys don't have to deal with as much in your hunting area.

Musky, I have a brother in law that has the same problem as you. His neighbors hunt the property line and shoot onto his property. Three years ago great 12 point was taken on his side of the property. He confronted them and they said "it was going to jump the fence to our side anyways."

He then placed no less then 50 no trespassing signs up and down the property line and added "smile you are on camera". During rifle season he invited everyone he knew to stand along the line for two days. He gave up one full season so his neighbors would get the point.

He took it a little farther and bought some of those landmines that are used for paintball and put them 15 feet on to his property. Three of the 10 were set off - he actually watched one person walk over and kick the dirt... "poof". and one night he had a phone call telling him he had to pay for their clothes to be cleaned. He laughed and said sure let me call the CO so we can show him. Although I might not recommend that - what if the guy had a heart attack? Might be some litigation, but not sure.
