alumacraft3
Ive tried researching this on the internet and I see pictures and videos but there is no links to buy these things anywhere. Ive looked at one that mounts on the grab bar on the back of a snowmobile. It is small and U shaped and locks the auger in with a hook. Anyone know what company makes them and where I can buy one online. Ive also seen auger carries that are mounted on the front of a snowmobile. Are they all homemade or can you buy one for the front of your sled? Also any pros and cons about these or other carriers would be great. Thanks
fivebucks
I bought one last year like the one you are talking about. If I remember correctly I bought it thru Digger Anchor and got it I think at Fleet Farm in the ice fishing section.
Steve Foss
I'm thinking seriously of having a local welder fabricate one for the front of my sled. It balances the sled better than adding the weight of the auger to the back. I have a 2-up Polaris with the suspension maxed out, and when I carry all my gear on the back and add a passenger, I bottom out a bit on the bumps. It also doesn't steer nearly as well because the rear weight removes downward pressure on the skis, which can make my sled harder to control. It's an older (92) Polaris, but with low miles and a good suspension. I know the newer sleds have a lot more travel between track and body, and of course if you have one of those big sleds designed as a workhorse, the added weight in the back won't bother things a bit.I've never seen commercially available front auger racks. With all the different sled ages and configurations, I'd think you'd have to come up with too many designs to make it viable as a business. Random guy
Just make sure the rack/holder supports the head off the unit. Thats alot of weight bouncing around sideways on the gear box.

Pat Burch
Strike master makes a good auger rack that goes on the back of the sled. I also have some friends that weld and have customized holders for the front. I like the front better for allot of reason, but a custom one can be made for a few hundred dollars. tsande00
I'm pretty sure the Strikemaster one is made by Digger. You can save 5 bucks by ordering through Fleet Farm. Cost around $85. Seems overpriced to me. I'm going to try to rig up something similar with some strut and a welder.
Brad B
Strikemasters is made by Digger. if you are in doubt about the diggers go to the ice show and check them out. they are nice units.
Stoneman
Made a great carrier on my cat Panther, it has a rear basket. Used a hold down bar from my snowmobile trailer. Bought auger rack hold downs from a 4 wheeler and bolted on hold down bar and U bolted to basket. Never moves and more than secure! Good luck
Fred_Bear
I built a custom one on the front of an Indy 500 in my buddies garage. Took about 5 hours and $30 and I am not a very good welder by an means. If you can get access to a welder, it's easier than you think. Just get creative and the hardest part is finding a way to attach it to the frame.

Doesn't look like much of a challenge, really, but I don't weld at all, so it's something I'd likely farm out unless I can find some type of metal I can bend and/or bolt that'll be strong enough to hold the auger. I got a buddy who's an electrician and bends a lot of conduit, but I doubt that's going to stand the gaff. With a bench vise to flatten it in certain spots, a little ingenuity and enough 1" galvanized pipe and some threaded elbows and Ys, a guy could probably get er done. Gunflint Guy
Any photos? or a more detailed description of materials and such? Is your rack supporting the auger head or just twice on the shaft?
Fred_Bear
2 poles to support the auger that are ~ 3/8" steel rod. 1 is a Y that the auger shaft nestles into. The other is just a straight piece sticking up to support the auger head. I welded a small piece of ~1/2" round steel tubing to the auger handle that the rod fits into (this works on my nils and jiffy but would need something different for plastic strikemaster handles). The auger is strapped down with 1 bungie. It's lasted 5 years of driving way too fast over drifts and bumpy portages with zero damage to the auger or the rack and the auger has never fallen off once.I'll try to get some pictures later this week. Steve Foss
I'll try to get some pictures later this week. I'd like to see them, especially where the rack is bolted on to the belly of the sled.
Mike Stark
i just mounted the Digger Auger Carrier on the front of my 93 Polaris. It's pretty slick.

toughguy
I'm going to pick up my digger auger carrier at FF after work. Had one on a rain check and they finally came in. I'll post a pic if I get a chance to install it tonight. They were $20 off a few weeks back.
Mike Stark
This should work right?
toughguy
From their HSOforum standard mount. It does a sandwich on your rear bumper. standard mount with narrow trail bracket added. I might pick one of these up for those skinny portages.
Steve Foss
Mike, that looks purty darn good. I have the same grab bar on the front of my sled. Just made things a LOT easier. Thanks for posting it!
rouser
I was hoping I would have enough bumper out front to mount up the Digger mount to my Polaris.. no such luck. I still like the mount but I am not ruling out a project next summer to come up with a front mounting system.
toughguy
The only thing I wish it had was some sort of quick release on the mounting. My sled cover won't fit with this thing on so my choices are to either take it off and put it on when I get to the lake or go without a travel cover that keeps the salt off. Didn't think of that until it was installed.
muc33
I will have to dig for my other photo's I have the posted in here somewhere. I have the Johnson system I got at the ice show. I see they have a new model this year as well. I made some minor modifications to it for strength and workability and I really like it. Dahitman44
Do all of these racks need you to "disfigure" your sled. I don't want to do that. I have a new ski-doo. My old polaris would not have been a problem to do that ...
