Only 2 Crawlers in My Cup!!!

17 posts in this topic

Okay, so many of you that know me on here understand that I sell Crawlers and Leeches - so this is NOT an attempt to slander competition. Just an unfortunate story of a dissatisfied customer!

The other day, I wanted to head down to the Des Moines River and see if I could reel in a couple catfish. I like to use big crawlers and a treble hook on this particular section. It was getting late, and I didn't have time to swing back by the house - so I stopped in WalMart and picked up a cup of Canadian Crawlers for $3.16. I get to the river, park, walk down and start setting up. As I go to bait the hook - I pop open the cup - and much to my surprise, only 2 crawlers in the cup!!! I was ticked.

If that ever happens to you when using my bait - let me know right away.

I have actually had the opposite happen... I picked up a cup of the same crawlers at the same retailer and had almost double what I was supposed too.

That's why I always check cups when I buy bait. That woulda ticked me off.

LAS - good thought. If I ever force myself to buy bait from WalMart again - I'll see to it that I take from the back - and check the cup for quantity.

I guess I take it for granted - I usually get my bait shipped to me from our wholesale facility in Long Prairie, MN. That way, I know nobody else has touched it, and it is always more fresh than if it sat on a store shelf/cooler.

Loon, that is a good point I have never thought about. I don't see something like that happing at the smaller bait shops as they may see someone rummaging around over at the frig, to long, but at a place like W/M who is watching the worms?? Most of the time you can't even find someone to help you! laugh

Doesn't matter who's selling the bait, I ALWAYS open the tub to see what I'm buying (checking condition) Locally, the baitshops we had, the waxies were brown to black, their crawlers were dead and reeking and their minnows were swimming in the tank but belly up in the minnow bucket. I now pick my own crawlers and trap/ seine my own minnows and have for the last several years. Canadian crawlers are okay in a pinch, but I'll take my own lawn crawlers anyday!! BTW, I've found that the best thing to keep your picked crawlers in is last falls' leaves. If you don't have any in your window wells etc, take a trip to the local woods with a plastic bag and stuff it full. It's food, habitat and it's FREE! Plus, they seem to thrive in them. Phred52

How tough is it for Wally-world to count worms? It's as easy as "uno, dos, tres,..."

I bought a tub of waxies (250 count) so I thought. I get out to the shack and come to find out, there was only 25-50 waxies in there. Boy, I was slighty upset. The trip ended alot sooner

i havent ran in to having 2 but certain places not walmart i go tiny crawlers when they said they were the big ones or a few big and most small. Always have to check what you get before you buy or else you might be suprised. I always check waxes to see if there are a lot of dead ones they arent good at that

I never deal with those folks from Arkansas so I can't say I've had any experience with short counts. But it would seem to me that the chances of anyone from there sitting around counting out worms, in English or Spanish, is nil. Iwould bet they get the stuff ready to go and just toss it in the fridge, and wouldn't know a worm from a piece of wire. My thought is that it is some cheap non-FMer stealing from them, and ultimately screwing someone's trip up who hasn't paid attention.

Thanks for giving me another good reason to not deal with any of the XMarts.

Looks like we hit a hot topic! I just had my distribution office ship down some crawlers from MN (I'm in Central Iowa) and they came on SpeeDee in less than 1 day. Ice bottle still cold. Good lively crawlers - and yes, the cups were full!

It is always better to deal with the small guys anyway. Screw Walmart...I'll never go back there again for fishing equipment of any kind.

I am not a huge fan of WM and I am not trying to claim they are non-evil, but this issue is not really their fault. Unless it's a shoplifter issue, it's the crawler company's problem. The crawler quality is definitely the crawler company's problem and not WM's. WM just sells what the manufacturer gives them, if they get a bunch of complaints they will look for a different supplier.

If you have the money to not shop at WM, congratulations. I don't. When I need a toaster, I know where I can go and get a white one for 10 bucks and I know where I can "target" fashionable lime green colored toasters for 10 bucks more so they match my wife's kitchen motif grin . I can also pick up a rapala for a buck less than the local bait shop down the road.

No offense to the mom and pop stores out there, but I just go with what is most cost effective for me on my limited budget.

We're thinking about carrying waxies this winter - the HSOforum just launched a month ago, so we didn't have the means to distribute them in the past. Actually, I am considering a lot of options right now. I need to carry more than just leeches and crawlers.

    • So lets recap.   Decriminalization will not reduce prison populations by a noticeable amount.    Will not reduce crime.   Will not reduce monies spent combating drug suppliers and dealers.   Will not lower the consumption rates.    - Will allow regular everyday citizens who use/possess and get caught, not ruin their lives with a crippling criminal record.   May encourage the the habitual users to seek treatment/help.      Which I have no issues with.   My issues are saying with decriminalization it will save tax payers any money.   That's my beef.
    •   I didn't see the Socialist party listed

    • Nick they are all trash, your party included, until you figure that out you are no better than some blind Trump supporter.
    •   That was a long time ago.   The media has become far more partisan than it was at that time.

    • You are starting to sound like a helpless snowflake in desperate need of big government to take away the burden of personal responsibility away from you. I try and take a big picture approach and not mico manage our laws based on political views outside of science or common sense.

No one is advocating for drunk driving or murder to be legal but I guess that doesn't stop you from using wild assumptions without anything to back them up.

All most of us are asking for is simple freedoms and choices and a government that stays out of the way. Having a bunch of drugs that kill and half of the legal and half of them illegal makes no sense. You either stand for personal freedom and responsibility across the board or you don't, picking and choose this stuff based on political leanings is about as backwards as it gets and you just end up looking like a complete hypocrite. Keeping drugs outlawed because people die is the same kind of reasoning people use to take away guns. All the while you are more likely to die from eating too much McDonalds, you simply can't outlaw stupid people or the things they do and expect that to work. We as a people need to stop trying to control things are completely out of our control, all it does is waste tons of money and time and it does a wonderful job of ruining people's lives.
    • I really don't like a president calling out news media outlets by name and whining about the media. Obama did it with FOX and talk radio and now Trump is doing it with CNN and the NYT's. It's one thing for each men's supporters to do it. But I don't recall GWB or Reagan or Carter calling out the media by name in public.   I don't buy the claim from some(nobody here) that doing such is a sign of a dictator(the same, btw, who cheered BHO doing it). It just makes a president look weak and whiny and looking for other's to blame for their own failures. Not that I'm a fan of the NYT's, but I do believe in freedom of the press even the press I personally don't care much for.   If you're an elected official, the press is supposed to be a thorn in your side
    •   This is what Del was probably talking about and yes he is right, we do have to pick a side or at least a candidate when we go to the polling booth but there is no need to defend every single move the candidate makes and vilify every single move the opposition makes.      I'm not sure what makes us think and behave the way we do, I didn't take enough psychology or anthropology courses in college to answer that question but I do know that to me it is even more repulsive than the small minded thinking that goes in to hating one sports team although they are basically the same as your chosen sports team. I can see liking and rooting for one sports team or political faction over another but the pure hatred for the opposite team is mind boggling to me.     These are the fine points of this article as I see it. Now would anyone like to have a discussion on these points?
    •   This paragraph is important because I believe that most people now when faced with a political discussion do indeed "turn off their intellect". It's the only way to get through the hypocrisy that arises when one chooses a side so completely.

    • 2.27.17 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report   Hello from the NW Angle!   Ice conditions are still favorable with 20-24 inches of solid ice in non-current areas. Snow cover is minimal on snowmobile trails but are still being groomed and in good condition.   On the Minnesota side, we are seeing walleyes being caught  on shallower rock points between 20-24 feet as well as deeper mud between 28-30 feet. A good number of saugers and perch are also being produced. Black and gold have been performing very well using a variety of baits. Canada is still producing but the crappie bite has been hot and cold within the last week. Walleyes are are most active on rock humps with successful colors being, blue and white, pink and gold.   Until next week! Sunset Lodge Ice Team
