Getting new gear dialed in

Recommended Posts

It's always a good idea to get familiar with new gear before it really matters. I took delivery of the Canon 1D Mk3 and 300 f2.8L IS yesterday, and have been getting to know the ins and outs. Shot the 300 a bunch of times, but not the Mk3.

And for the curious among you, just curb your curiosity. Things are what they are. smilesmilesmile

All with the Mk3 and 300/1.4 TC. All at iso400/800, various shutter speeds and apertures, both handheld and with monopod.

Now, these are not special photographs. Nothing remarkable about them. It's just fun to share now and then. Over the last two days I've seen VERY fresh tracks of moose and wolves, but had to settle for the usual suspects when it came to subjects. And even those were hard to get. Not much moving out there these last coupla days. That's OK. Just being in this paradise, listening to the ice sigh and gurgle as it heaves in sheets along the rivers, is reward enough. smilesmile

Man, looks like you're exploring every corner or venue with that combo, Steve! Going to have to give it a good work out! I like the squirrel and the south ends of those deer going north! grin

Congrats on the new gear! Looking forward to seeing what you can churn outta that combo this summer!

Also a wise investment-both are built like tanks!

Hopefully, you'll be able to get alot of shots of the migration up there in the coming weeks. Our weather has been foul, and I've been tied up most weekends shooting in Churches-you know how that is.

Keep posting!

Congrats on getting the new gear! I'm sure you'll love the high ISO performance of the Mark III and there isn't a lens in the Canon lineup that is better than the 300mm F/2.8 in sharpness/contrast!!

Very nice images, I particularly enjoy the composition of the red squirrel image (shooting through the foliage gave a nice effect), and all the space in the gray jay image is quite nice.
