Bucksnort101
Well, I find myself in need of a new shotgun and am looking for recommenedations. Will be used to Turkey, Duck, and Goose hunting. Don't need or want anythign too fancy, ust reliable and relatively inexpensive.Biggest requirement is I like a short stock as I tent to catch the stock in my armpit when I shoulder a shotgun.I have shot the Benelli Nova and shot it well, but the forearm just seems awkward to me. Have owned two Mossbergs, a 935 Semi, and a 535 pump and for some reason both had problems ejecting 3.5" shells. Would not have a problem getting another Mossberg if I hear that this is not a common problem with the model?Any suggestions.
S.D. Ice Angular
I know they can be pricey and this will bring out some controversy but I love my Benelli SBE II.I would buy the gun that best fits your needs and that fits you personally. I use my SBE for Turkeys and waterfowl. Some people call Semi Autos contraption guns but it works for ME…
Bucksnort101
Nice Shotgun, but don't have that much to spend. With a new Custom Longbow due up for payment in the next month there isn't a lot of spare cash to spend on a Shotgun.
Jim Uran
Remington 870, at least consider it. I believe they make a model chambered for 3 1/2 shells also. The new Mossberg 500's have too many problems from what I've read.
Bucksnort101
Come to think of it, the last Mossberg was a 500 series. I think it must have belonged to a PETA member in a previous life as it always seemed to jam up at the least appropriate time.
Jim Uran
Well if you get a chance check out an 870 see how it shoulders, those guns are just plain tough. Plus teh price is right compared to them italian jobbies.
Bucksnort101
Looks like a trip to The Big C store in Rogers later. The 870 was on the list of ones to look at. My buddy has an older one with a wooden stock that seemed a bit too long for me. The other thing I need to consider is I am left handed, but will shoot off my right shoulder if the shot require, so a safely lock on the top of the receiver would be beneficial, that's why I was drawn to the Mossbergs. S.D. Ice Angular
I also have an 870 that is 28 years old now and still works great.Truth be known though out of all my 12Ga shot guns I shoot it the best. But I just like to shoot the SBE better??IF it fits you (again I think that is very important)I believe the 870 would be a great choice as wellNot that you need it but I would get a 3-1/2" version though. norm25
I love my Browning BPS great for lefties.
DonBo
Love my 870(s) also, but a lefty will be hard to find. The safety is on the right side and it is a left side eject...not well suited for a lefty.Browning BPS is a top safety and bottom eject, perfect for either hand but will be a bit more expensive than an 870.Good luck! GRH
I'd recomend an 870 also, great guns and they are not expensive
motley man
Can't beat the 870 as it is very durable. Mine has been around many years and still works perfect.
koonie
Check out an Ithaca model 37. Tough as nails and has bottom eject so it works well for left or right handers.
96trigger
Beretta, if you can find a used AL390, in my opinion, one of the best guns ever made. Can usually find them used for around $500. If thats too much, I don't think you can go wrong with an 870 or even a winchester 1300 speed pump. I would take the speed pump over an 870 express, but the 870 wingmaster over the speed pump. picksbigwagon
You can now get stocks that are collapsable like on the ar-15's. Mossberg makes a model that comes with option, or you can get a new stock set for about 80 bucks for a remington 870. might be what you are looking for if you have a problem shouldering a shotgun. You might want to practice with mounting your shotgun with your hunting clothes once in a while too. I have been guilty of catching an armpit in the heat of the moment before too, always seems to happen at the wrong time as well
KTapper
I see a lot fo people are saying 870 and I would have to agree I have the black 870 supermag express. Its a nice clean looking gun and can take the abuse.
96trigger
I don't know how anybody could not like an 870, especially the wingmaster. I personally don't own one, but I have a lot of respect for a gun that continues to perform from generation to generation.
youngie22
My vote goes to a benelli nova, great gun. great price. Love the little button on stock Like the SBEII. Fits great on me, have a buddy that doesn't care for how the benelli's go up to his shoulder; I think he just doesn't want to admit me likes my gun better. IMO you must give it a chance and check it out at the store. Comes in camo shoots up to 3 1/2" can also get it in a combo w/ cantilevered rifled barrel that you can keep a scope on, take it off a but on the smooth bird barrel that comes w/ 3 choke tubes. Let us know what you get when you "pull the trigger"
