Anyone catch Larry Dahlberg this weekend?

Larry had a couple really good shows on this weekend.

One was a history about fishing lures which ended with the development of the double 10 bucktails.

The other was a trip to Musky Mayhem Tackle to fish with Brad Hoppe and further explore the Double Cowgirl phenomenon.

Check them out if you get a chance!

yup, seen 'em. Larry always seems to come up with some great material on his show. really great to hear he's going to fish muskie more. i wonder what saltwater tactics he's talking about? hmmmm. should be cool.

I know he mentioned Kites a few times.

That should turn a few heads on the lake.

Loved that 24' Skeeter bay boat he was running around in too!

what is kite fishing?

i know a guy in florida who does it. i guess it was started by shore fishermen wanting to get their bait out really far, then there's the bounce tecnique where the bait is bounced along the surface. and still fishing, as still as a kite will do, lol. i've heard of lures being used but never seen it. it's used out of boats now too. flies a guess are pretty common. this guy was telling me he was fishing with a friend and they were getting tarpon with flies and a kite. honestly, it's a lot of work just to catch a fish. a guy would need to be real bored i think. downrigger type clips are used and snaps and swivels then sent out, it's just crazy. i'll just cast, unless maybe theres a spot i just can't get to anyway.

My one time fishing the Ocean we passed up a boat running a kite. Looked as though they also had several other rods running a conventional trolling set-up. The kite wasn't all that far behind the boat though so I don't know how much further back you could be running it.

I think he's more talking about trolling techniques where you use some specific turns to cause rods on either side of the boat to run specific ways.

It would prolly get some odd looks but I've had the occasion to fish from a couple bay boats and if I had the means I'd get a big bay boat. They handle big water well, they fish well, with the console in the middle its really easy to fish a fish from anywhere, driving in bad weather seems to be much easier on your body standing than sitting. I already thought I was too big an one-who-thinks-I-am-silly to try video trolling, I couldn't imagine trying to run kites...

Maybe running marlin teasers off the back then doing the ol' bait and switch when a musky boils. Talk about chaos...

I've wanted to try kite fishing from shore for big saltwater predators using live bait. One technique is using the kite to keep the baitfish at the surface, splashing and causing a commotion. Really brings in the hungry predators. I have a hunch it'd work fantastic with ladyfish.

Good show on yesterday. Larry spent a day with Blue Ribbon Bait's Josh Stevenson on the Croix. They caught a couple muskies, but what was really amazing was Dahlberg caught a sturgeon on a muskie crankbait and managed to foul hook it on a DNR dorsal tag! The fish had good length and girth, had grown an inch since the previous year, and was first tagged in roughly the same spot.
