anybody lost a rod down the hole?

I had the same thing happen to me with a rod down the hole on URL when I was not looking. About 2 hrs later a big northern took one of the other lines in the sleeper house and did a big swing around....ended up bringing up my rod I lost some how!!

Same rod- dropped it down the hole while crappie fishing in 30 ft. After some 20 min worth of jigging got it back again. That’s twice down the hole with the same rod!!

One more.. on URL in the middle of the day a buddy bumped my Coleman lantern and down it went. I didn’t bring my camera so a few hours later our "guide" brought one and there it was sticking in the sand upside down! Nothing to really hook to but I caught the inside lip somehow..thought I was going to snap my line bringing it up. Put in new mantels and it fired right up!!

Last weekend we were fishing a deep hole and a friends rod went down the hole. He got mad and wet at the same time. I could see it on my vex. I told him it was at 20' now 30' and them my bobber started going down. Well I ended up catching his rod on one of the eyes. He went from mad to happy in about 30 seconds. What are the odds of that happening again?

Three "events".

Me- Borrowed Dad's brand new heavy duty chisel. He warned me to make "blankety, blank" sure I had the rope wrapped around my wrist. The ice was really deep that year on Ashtabula (ND). I was on my knees and as the last whack hit the ice it went through and slipped off my arm and down the hole. Boy, it took a long time to get home that night.

One brother- We were fishing on Red Willow(ND)for walleyes with your basic jig sticks stuck in a snow bank. I warned him several times to keep a close eye on his because this might happen. He went over to check on his lines and one was missing. An hour or more later, the jig stick floated up another hole about twenty feet away with the walleye still on it.

Another brother- Believe it or not, the only alchohol related. We were fishing at Dry Lake, again in North Dakota. He was more interested in partying than fishing and all of a sudden his rods starts skipping across the ice. He makes a run for it and belly flops on the ice skidding up to and past the hole with the rods beating him to the hole. He's ticked because it was his good summer reel. Two hours and fifteen yards later, Dad gets hit and is fighting a pretty nice northern. He's finally making progress and up comes a big bobber. He makes the comment that he must be getting close again. I noticed it was not his bobber and my brother comes flying over to the hole. It was his, he pulls on the line until the reel and rod comes up the hole. Now we have two guys fighting two fish from the same hole at the same time. Got both fish, his rod back and miraculously, they did not make too much of a mess.

Just remembered a fourth. Cousin- I pulled up to his baitshop on Lida (MN) just before the opener and he asks me if we can make a little run in my boat. I have a feeling this was beer related too. We head over to Clay Point and on the way he tells me he had lost his chisel in January and wanted to see if he could find it. I'm thinking he's nuts. Actually, I'm pretty sure he is. He lines up a tree branch with a window of a house and tells me to stop. Looks down and there the goofy thing is in about six feet of water. He pulls out a big hook and some cord, drops it down and hooks it.

Several years ago we were fishing with tipups and a couple portables. We fished well after dark as it was pretty warm and the beverages were flowing. One of the guys got a bite and wasn't looking, fish pulled his jigstick down the hole, we assumed lost forever.

We had done pretty well on the eyes that night, so the next afternoon me and a buddy went back to the same spot. As we approached I saw an orange flag sticking up. It turned out that we had forgotten one of the tipups, so it had been out overnight and something had bit! I started pulling up the tipup line and got a nice 15 inch walleye with line wrapped around it, then pulled in the jigstick from the previous night, then pulled in that line and got an eelpout!

Fishing 3 yrs ago with a few buddys at URL in a few rentals. 4 of us in a shack, 4 in another. One of my buddys takes a quick walk over to the other rental when the DNR pulls up. Realizing, with him out of the shack, we were 2 lines over the limit with only 3 of us remaining. Instead of reeling them up or explaining to the officer, he gets 1 about half way up and says "i'm not going to make it" and tosses the other down the hole. After the officer leaves, he wonders how he will explain this one to his buddy. I get out a chubby darter and get it back just as he's walking back in the door.

i had portable radio in the window sill one year. i got a call on my cell and could get better reception near the window. my elbow knocked the radio off and down the hole it went. funny thing was that was the best hole for the rest of the season. 4 walleyes over 25" came out of that hole that year.

Were up at Mille lacs last weekend - a couple great stories. First night a big eelpout took the rattle wheel and in the process tangled up in a fishing pole sitting in the next whole. Only one of us got up (the other 3 were passed out) to pull up the pout and as he pulled it up, the rod with a holder went into the other whole. Thankfully, the line was tied enough & he was able to bring the rod up. The holder was gone until I fished it out with a tri-hook the next morning. Same trip - sunglasses go down the hole and as they are slowly sinking a guy fishing there was able to use his spoon to catch them on the way down & bring 'em up! luckiest thing i've ever seen!

we were on a small lake in the Black Hills, Lake Dalton. I punched a hole, hunched over, baited my hook and was letting out line off the pegs on the handle on the rod as the jig was sinkin. BAM!!! a hard hit and outta my hands the rod went like a javelin down the hole. Buddy and I both got a good laugh outta that.

Great thread on this topic. I got a few chuckles out em.

Was sitting in the permy a couple years ago and hooked into a good northern, everyone else started standing around watching me. Turns out the northern took a good run in the direction of another line, next thing you know that rod is gone. Pulled in the 5lb northern to find some mono tangled around my line. Was able to grab that line and pull up the rod that fell down the hole. Crazy things can happen.

I lost one - one year trout fishing after dark..... We each had a pole down with a minnow for trout and a school of crappie came thru...... In Indiana you can fish with more than one rod, AND that was my down fall....... While chasin' the crappies around the weedline, something decided to go ballistic on my other pole... Literally jerked it out of my bucket. I made a dive at the hole, but too little too late. On another note my dad found my rod that spring while flyfishing...... What a laugh.

Me and my kids have dropped a couple of flashlights down holes. It looks really cool at night as the light fades on the way down. wink Last year on LOW I was fishing in a rental house and had a tip up set up that I hit while landing another fish and it dropped into the hole and sank out of site. The next day we were in the same house and I was jigging when I felt an odd heavy sensation on my line. I started reeling up and saw this huge red mass on my Marcum. Well sure enough I had hooked my tip up and salvaged it. My son took a picture of me with my "trophy" right after I landed it. smile

Last year while crappie fishing I set the hook and brought up someones line I pulled up one end and there was a rod. So I started reeling on new found rod and reeled in a 3lb Pike. No one else was on the lake fishing for the 2 days I was up there. I hung that rod up in the garage like a trophy.
