seal on toilet

Be sure to buy new bolts and don't torque too much or you'll break the flange and then have a mess. There are flange repair kits available. Depending on how far you are from the store you could buy one for the just in case - they're only a few bucks.

I just had a lot of fun setting the toilet back down after a project. The bolts wouldn't stay standing. I took some masking tape and punched the bolt through and then secured the tape to the floor. This held the bolts up and I just had to scrape off the excess tape once the throne was in place.

I learned a trick from a plumber I had install a toilet for me: get two sets of bolts and use the extra nuts to affix the bolts to the flange firmly. Then they stand up tall. Line up and seat the toilet. Works great.

1+ on the extra nuts.

I have used a hot glue gun in the past. Holds the bolts up nice.

I like to use the wax seal with neoprene in it, I think it makes alinement easer.

But Murff, the guy screwed you. First of all he charged you double the price of the bolts and then scammed you for two sets!!! A real FM'er would have gone for a cheaper solution - such as getting a second set of bolts from the parts bin in the gaarage, or use my masking tape deal. Zero cost. C'mon, where's your frugelness?

Shut off the water supply. Flush the toilet to get ride of the water in the tank. Use a plunger to push most of the water out of the bowl and trap. Disconnect the water supply and remove the hold down nuts. Lift off the toilet and set it on an old rug. Remove the old wax from toilet base and flange. Install new wax ring and toilet blots. USE SOME OLD WAX to keep the bolts standing straight up. smile Set the toilet in place, use your weight directly over the flange to seat the toilet into the wax. Do Not rock the toilet when setting. Snug new nuts, don't over tighten.

Hook up water supply, turn supply on and check for leaks.

Tighten the bolts to the flange with a set of nuts and washers. Called double nutting. This will make taking the bolts off much easier should you need to take the toilet off in the future. Also, know where your shut off is for your house. Sometimes the old stops don't shut off as well as when they're new. A sponge is handy for getting the water out of the tank that didn't get flushed. Same with getting it out of the trap. If your toilet was caulked (as it should be) you may need to use a putty knife to break the seal from the bowl to the floor. Don't lift the toilet up by the tank. They can break that way. You might have to twist and spin the bowl a bit to get it to lift up. Have a piece of cardboard large enough to set the toilet on handy. Sometimes you get a lot of bowl wax stuck to the bottom and it's a bugger cleaning it up. Personally, I don't think you need a wax ring with anything but wax in it. Just one more thing to plug up, in my opinion. When you set the new bowl, make sure it doesn't rock. You can use some plastic or rubber shims under the edge of the bowl to keep this from happening. If it rocks, your wax ring will not seal properly causing either a potential sewer gas leak or a waste water leak. It's not hard just take your time.
