bmc
I was out ice fishing today and saw some geese and some ducks. They were using a channel that runs between 2 lakes. It made me wonder if they'd use that channel in the fall when things were icing up? May have to check that out this fall!Brian
blacksportsman
I've been observing the waterfowl action on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis lately. About a month ago, mergansers started popping up. More recently, I've been spotting a few bluebills, buffleheads, woodies and blue-wing teal here and there.Been seeing a handful of pied-billed grebes and coots on the river the last couple of days, too. HUNTFISH69
Haven't seen a whole lot for diversity among ducks around here yet, but a few woodies are starting to come through.Only 5 months until early goose!!

Bryce
Drove back to Willmar yesterday for PF banquet and back today. Took 2 different routes for just this reason. Geese appear to be preparing nests. Wide variety of ducks. Saw pintails, spoonies and a few woodies and teal along with a variety of divers and many swan. Conditions look very dry for this time of the year west of the metro. Dean Schellinger
Yeah, the sure are fun to watch. Today a flock of about 150 swans flew overhead, pretty neat. Lots of sandhill cranes around too.
IceHawk
Fished Red wing pool 4 yesterday and saw a pile of divers and a few woodies fly by. Locally I have been watching piles of swans fly over and if you want a real treat head down to local river you will see a variety of waterfowl. Springtime is a awesome time of yr! Sartell Angler
Saw bluebills, ringbills, buffies, hooded mergies, woodies, bwt, coot, malls, geese, swans, a rooster, and a big ol' gobbler on the drive back to st. cloud from waconia this morning. A couple nights ago I was laying in bed and heard a bunch of sandhills flying over the middle of st. cloud. This was at about 12:45am and of course no windows were open at the time. They are LOUD! fishhawk1750
I live in Ham Lake and right at first light this morning I looked out at our pond and we had 2 ringbills, 2 butterballs and 3 mallards. Just to the back of the pond there were 9 turkeys. Gotta love the spring!
ChuckN
Saw my first wood ducks on my pond on April 2. That's the earliest I can remember. Mallards and geese galore.. Last week was the most incredible migration of geese I had seen too. Every morning on my way to work, in every direction, there were huge flocks of geese going north. Now, we get hammered with a bunch of snow and cold...
HUNTFISH69
Starting to see come ringnecks and buffies, up around saint cloud, my buddy saw a shoveler yesterday. Been hearing a few sandhills as well.
Sartell Angler
a small slough along a county road south of St. Cloud was full of birds today...spotted many buffies, hooded mergies, ringbills, bluebills, woodducks, honkers and geese
Dean Schellinger
you missed the most obvious duck-mallards!
Sartell Angler
that goes without saying...malls are everywhere ANOTHER REPORT: A buddy called me this morning to tell me there was a flock of 200 snow geese (I'd assume most were juvies at this point) flying over the SCSU campus and headed to the NW. He was doing his best to follow them but if you've driven through St. Cloud in the past 50 years you understand that getting across town is no easy task. Would be cool if they holed up in a local pond during the storm (outside of city limits of course) and we were able to line up some heads and put the hurt on 'em. I'll keep ya posted! HUNTFISH69
Had a pretty good sized flock of swans fly over me over on the east side of STC around 3 this afternoon, probably around 35 of them.
surewood
Ducks and geese are showing up daily up here. It's a little odd to see them with two feet of snow on the ground, good pictures though. I'll post some when I can get them on my digital camera and not my phone.
Scott M
Yesterday I swung out to Cabela's in Rogers. At the turnoff from the 101 I sat waiting for a red light to change and the pond next to the road had probably 13-14 pair of bluebills and at least one Canvasback pair. A very neat sight to see...I wish I would have had the camera with, but my little point and shoot wouldn't have done it any justice.
Huntin&Fishin
I live in Rogers and I know of another pond that is spring fed that has been full of Bluebillsfor 2 weeks now, every day! Its an awesome sight. I took a video of them, that is sort of neat.
schr0563
I spent most of yesterday driving around the west metro hoping to snap a few photos of migrating ducks. I was amazed by the different species that I saw at one pond...Mallards, Wood Ducks, Coots, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Blue Wing Teal, Ringnecks, Bluebills, Bufflehead, Canvasbacks, Redheads, Pintails, and Widgeon. This was my first time seeing wild pintails and widgeon so that made my day. Unfortunately most of these ducks were beyond a reasonable distance for taking quality pictures. If they are still around this weekend I'll try and get closer.
wooduck26
I was shocked to say the least when I saw this bugger in my backyard pond in Oakdale.....he was there then left with a pair of Canadas then returned again.....Pretty cool!
