Well, the ducks are coming back! By Mississippi/35E and also by home on Hwy 61 going north into WBL by Goose Lake - lots of bluebill, ringbill, some buffies and goldeneye have been around for a week or so, and they are starting to get thick. Nice time to get the camera out, actually... if I had a decent camera \:\)

Greenheads are horny now too, wow are they starting to giv ethe hens heck. Tis the season - great time for duck watching!

I was out ice fishing today and saw some geese and some ducks. They were using a channel that runs between 2 lakes. It made me wonder if they'd use that channel in the fall when things were icing up? May have to check that out this fall!

I've been observing the waterfowl action on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis lately. About a month ago, mergansers started popping up. More recently, I've been spotting a few bluebills, buffleheads, woodies and blue-wing teal here and there.

Been seeing a handful of pied-billed grebes and coots on the river the last couple of days, too.

Drove back to Willmar yesterday for PF banquet and back today. Took 2 different routes for just this reason. Geese appear to be preparing nests. Wide variety of ducks. Saw pintails, spoonies and a few woodies and teal along with a variety of divers and many swan. Conditions look very dry for this time of the year west of the metro.

Fished Red wing pool 4 yesterday and saw a pile of divers and a few woodies fly by. Locally I have been watching piles of swans fly over and if you want a real treat head down to local river you will see a variety of waterfowl. Springtime is a awesome time of yr!

Saw bluebills, ringbills, buffies, hooded mergies, woodies, bwt, coot, malls, geese, swans, a rooster, and a big ol' gobbler on the drive back to st. cloud from waconia this morning.

A couple nights ago I was laying in bed and heard a bunch of sandhills flying over the middle of st. cloud. This was at about 12:45am and of course no windows were open at the time. They are LOUD!

Saw my first wood ducks on my pond on April 2. That's the earliest I can remember. Mallards and geese galore..

Last week was the most incredible migration of geese I had seen too. Every morning on my way to work, in every direction, there were huge flocks of geese going north.

Now, we get hammered with a bunch of snow and cold... crazy.gif

that goes without saying...malls are everywhere

ANOTHER REPORT: A buddy called me this morning to tell me there was a flock of 200 snow geese (I'd assume most were juvies at this point) flying over the SCSU campus and headed to the NW. He was doing his best to follow them but if you've driven through St. Cloud in the past 50 years you understand that getting across town is no easy task. Would be cool if they holed up in a local pond during the storm (outside of city limits of course) and we were able to line up some heads and put the hurt on 'em.

I'll keep ya posted!

Ducks and geese are showing up daily up here. It's a little odd to see them with two feet of snow on the ground, good pictures though. I'll post some when I can get them on my digital camera and not my phone.

Yesterday I swung out to Cabela's in Rogers. At the turnoff from the 101 I sat waiting for a red light to change and the pond next to the road had probably 13-14 pair of bluebills and at least one Canvasback pair. A very neat sight to see...I wish I would have had the camera with, but my little point and shoot wouldn't have done it any justice.

I spent most of yesterday driving around the west metro hoping to snap a few photos of migrating ducks. I was amazed by the different species that I saw at one pond...

Mallards, Wood Ducks, Coots, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Blue Wing Teal, Ringnecks, Bluebills, Bufflehead, Canvasbacks, Redheads, Pintails, and Widgeon. This was my first time seeing wild pintails and widgeon so that made my day.

Unfortunately most of these ducks were beyond a reasonable distance for taking quality pictures. If they are still around this weekend I'll try and get closer.
