It Is Almost Over

Farwell to another great year!

I will say (with no advertisement involved) FM/IL has made this ice year a great year. I have caught more and better fish this season, than in years past. I have a lot of thanks to FM/IL for this.

I now own a new flasher and some new presentations thanks to FM/IL, that helped my ice season immensely.

It is sad to say, but the ice gear is going to be put away Monday. I know, I know I can still pull a jig stick or two out for a quick trip, but the mentality of ice has faded in my mind. I am sure it has with others.

I went River fishing (open water) on Friday and all I can say now is bring on open water. But!!!!!! I still have a great late ice trip to ML in the morning that could pull me towards further ice action this year. Who knows.

All I can say is, if I win the lotto on Wednesday, I would treat every ice fisherman I could on this site to a fishing trip of some sorts. I will add I do not play the lottery, but with the info I have learned from this forum, I sure would love to repay it in some fashion.

So, I think the end is near and everyone should get out one last time (keep safety in mind) and report back.

I love ice and it makes me sad it is almost over.

Remember, there is always cat fishing. It is what keeps me going during the soft water season.

Good lucks guys..

I hear ya Shack, wish I coulda head up there with you tomorrow, just couldn't make it out. I don't know if I'll go out next weekend or not. I'm thinking I might pull the boat out and get her ready next week and see if anyone can show me how to catch fish on the sippi.

There is a ton of great info on this site and I have learned so much from reading and going to the get togethers. Awesome site and very adicting. I've met great people off of here as well. I really grew to love ice fishing this year, was the first year I had to really commit to it. My passion is still sitting in the boat, but now I don't feel to bad when the boat goes away cause I know ice is coming.

My shack and auger went up yesterday. It's been a great ice season, and there is still some decent ice in the area, but it's time to turn thoughts to getting the boat ready and shooting the bow to get ready for turkey season. But without a doubt, a memorable year on the hard water.

I fished 'Tonka yesterday and it was fine. I walked with a spud in my hand and checked the ice as I walked. No soft spots in the ice that I encountered. The edges on the north side are in tough shape, but the south and west edges of bays are still in pretty good shape. I plan to fish the ice until the edges pull back from shore.

I am also packing up my gear after one of the worst ice fishing winters I have had since I started ice fishing 8 years ago. I think mostly due to just fishing the lake where I live (seems it is either really tough to find them or more likely very few fish to be had). But I will not despair because I learned so many good tips on FM, and come next winter I will fire up the old 4 wheeler and hit some new lakes. I will have to admit that ice fishing was much more fun when the hubby was able to go with, after all he would drill all the holes. \:D Now I am getting excited about firing up the boat and hitting my own little honeyhole for eyes and pike. May 10th can't come soon enough for me. Barb

I know what you mean, eyepatrol, must get those projects done before May. So the ice fishing gear is put back into the shed, and the boat is back in the garage. Getting the boat ready is one of those projects, even though she doesn't add it to the honey-do list.

I was out this morning, I push down on the auger to punch new holes. Its very honeycombed the top 16". I had to use waders to get out to ice to hold me up, a little over knee deep. It lost about 8" of ice since the 19 of march. This should be the last time I need to auger hole open till ice out. grin.gif i am going to try to make it out every night this week.

I have my shack up on the shelf now as well. I had a fun year, and thanks to all for all of the great tips and advice. My mindset has already shifted and I can't wait for open water fishing now \:\)

Had to throw that in...One more trip to LOW coming up this weekend.

I used a version of that quote earlier this year and somebody corrected me "... the Germans didn't bomb Pearl harbor..." I didn't reply as I simply felt sorry for anybody who hasn't seen "Animal House." crazy.gif

My favorite time to ice fish has yet to come! I was still driving out around St.Cloud today. I like when you have to use boards to get on the ice. Not many people out, holes stay open, beautiful weather, and active fish. I got a couple weeks left.

I've seen Animal House, but it has been a long time since I have seen it. Sorry if i upset anyone, guess i'll have to go rent the movie and watch it this week beings they are now calling for up to a foot of snow here in kato. That aint gonna do justice for the ice.

Yeah, I here the weather is going to get bad back home in southern MN! Up here in Bemidji the ice is anything but finished. I have a feeling when it goes it will go quickly, but most lakes are still vehicle safe right now! Still burying the auger almost down to the head! I'll be ice fishing till the bitter end! There are still plenty of pannies to be caught up here!

Good Luck to all who head out!

The end is near but not yet. I am hoping to at least gt another week out of it. Yeasterday on Turtle Lake there were 3 vehicles out there and we were buring the auger in the slush.. Anywhere north of the cities still has tons of driveable ice and the late ice bite hasnt even really started yet because the ice hasnt even started going out yet. It has definately been a long year (Thanksgiving til early April) and i am excited for spring fishing but will try to squeeze a few more trips out of the ice season yet... How do you all think the snow will fare on the ice? I think it will act as a good insulator but once it turns to water the ice will deteriorate quickly..

Later,

Ryan

Me also!!!!!!

I am head’ in to the Northwest Sportsman Show to blow a bunch on bills on open water Catt’in gear.

After this snow, I am ready. Late ice is great, but if there is snow, it sucks. The fishing maybe great, but snow makes it hard to move from hole to hole.

The shack is airing out, the auger gas tank is drained, the batteries are on charger for the boat and the boat is being pulled into the shop.

It is over for me.

Good luck to those that go though.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
