tisosy11
What does everyone use? I am thinking about the Rapala...Is this a good product or is the regular filet knife just good enough...
stick
I just got the plug in style Rapala knife and like it. My bro got the battery powered unit, and he became a believer in the electrics for ease of filletting. I did some research online, and a lot of people griped about the charge life of the battery units as well as the overall battery life. So...I went with the corded unit and really like it. hugonian1
I to went with the Rapala Electric kit. It's nice having the 12 volt option. I still use my regular fillet knife a lot but that electric is sure nice when you have a bucket full of perch.
ducksnbucks
I have the rapala battery powered knife and am not impressed. I have had it about a year and am very religous about charging the batteries. But now I can only get through about 2 fish with each battery. My dad has the plug in one and I would go that way for the sake of not having to replace batteries. This is just my opinion, not impressed with the battery operated ones. Windy City Walleye Hunter
I bought the Rapala and spent about $60 on it. It was the one before the rechargeable but it came with all the different hook ups so you could plug it in on the boat or into a regular plug in the fish house. I don't like that knife at all, it has a saftey that keeps getting caught and locks up the knife when I am doing multiple fish, very annoying.I also own a $20 Mister Twister that is green and yellow and avaiable at Wal-Mart everywhere and I absolutely love this knife! Hard to believe that spending one third would get that quality but it does. Sorry Rapala, not liking your knife.I wish I could bypass the safety switch, any electricians out there with suggestions? The knife itself is not bad and it came with two different lengths which are nice and a nice hard carrying case and a cutting board.Windy
GRH
I have a corded mister twister and like it. Used my dad's last weekend not sure on the brand and really liked it. It has thiner blades than my mister twister.
PerchPounder
I have a mister twister and love it! Plenty of power and the durability is unmatched from anything I've seen. I have heard stories of people stripping the nylon gears out of the rapala knives and the batteries not lasting as long as they should. This topic is also being discussed in the ice fishing forum. PerchPounder
I would have to say absolutely. This was the main reason for me to purchase one. Once you get the hang of it you will never go back.
Trick
I bought one of the "Storm" knives & stripped the gears out after just a few months....I think Rapala makes those too. I bought a mister twister now , but havent got to try it out yet.
PerchPounder
The saltwater version of the rapala knife comes with metal gears fwiw.
Windy City Walleye Hunter
I would have to agree. Once you go electric you never go back! And the nice thing about the $20 Mister Twister is that if it breaks down you just throw it away and get another one! Mine is going strong for 4 years now, blades still sharp and the thing is like the Energizer bunny...keeps going and going....Windy
hoggs222
I've had the mister twister for around 10 years and not a problem. The only thing I don't like about it is that the cord is way too short. You have to pull out the extension cord each time.
CrappiesNeyes
I agree, the Mister Twister works well, I also think the cord is a bit on the short side. I saw a guide on Mille Lacs use an electric bread knive and an electric turkey carving knife for walleyes. I have always thought of trying it, but I always grab the Mister Twister first. It might be worth a try?
rockman
I, too, have had my Mister Twister for about 10 years.I have to agree the cord is a bit short, and does tend to get in the way while filleting. That being said, I have been able to use it just fine. That knife has been pretty much bullet proof for me. I would get another one in a heartbeat.
Windy City Walleye Hunter
Even though I do all my own fish, our resort on Cass Lake has dock boys that will fillet your fish and they use the carving knives, Black and Decker, or what ever is cheap since they burn thru them pretty quick. I love my Mister Twister and would love my Rapala if I could disable that little red safety button.Looking for any electrical assistance out there??? HELP!Windy
rookie44
The rapala seems tobe way underpowered!
Cliff Wagenbach
I also owned the Rapala knife. It only lasted one year and stripped the gears out.A fellow guide has a Mr Twister that has been going for years and cut circles around my Rapala knife.Cliff
merganser
Hey windy city, I have the same problem with mine. The safety gets stuck and I have to wrap on the darn thing to get it to work. I have no complaints with the battery life....yet. One question I have for you is have you found any short blades for the knife? The long blades make it difficult on the smaller pannies. Windy City Walleye Hunter
Merg,Mine came with two blades, a shortie and a longer blade. I have asked but as of yet have not had any electricians ring here with a suggestion of how to disable the safety. I like the knife but hate the safety.Windy
