Rod storage for the garage

Does anyone have a good system they've made for storing rods in the garage? I'd like to hang some type of rack to store all my rods. I think hanging them horizontally above our vehicles will keep them out of the way and unbroken best. Just looking for some suggestions (and photos!)from those that have done this.

I would go to the Sportsman Show and check around. I store mine verticle on the wall, but Show should have some idea's for ya.

I just used simple vertical rod holders.

Just recently however, my wife said, "hey, why don't you just use one of the spare bedrooms for all your fishing [PoorWordUsage]".

I think I'm going to be picking up a nice display rack with some storage inside.

I thought of going the route of buying those vertical holders, but I don't like the price versus the number of rods they will hold. I want to build something that is going to hold all of my rods and do it with good style

We use similar. We take a 2x2 8' long and put bycycle hooks about every 8". You need room for the handles so they don't bang when putting them up/down. Then do another exactly like it. Take three screws and screw gun and attach it to your ceiling, put them about 4 feet apart. We have one set right above the boat, and another behind the boat, so the handles are all pointing right at the boat. We can grab each from inside the boat, making it easy and quick to swap rods depending upon what we are after.

edit: this is for the rods hanging parallel to the ceiling. You still have wall space. Only thing, this works for grabbing from inside the boat or on a ladder. To grab them you must have a little help if the boat is not there, like a step stool, etc.

It works great, and about as cheap as can be

We actually like the "square" style hook for the but_t end, as you can more easly put two rods/reels onto one of those if you need to.

1X4 with holes drilled threw for the cork handles, with another board hung about 4-5ft away with little grooves for the rod to sit on. Match the grooves to the holes for the handles. Can hold as many or as little as you want.

ABS pipe/1 1/2"-2" cheap. Drill a hole large enuff to get a bit into and screw it up. butt end you just need a short piece then how ever long ya want for the rod support.

I found something that works great. It may be kinda hard to picture, but here we go. I went out and bought some of those plastic conduit straps in 2 sizes, 3/4' and 1 1/4'. I cut about 1 3rd off one side of the 3/4' straps so that it has only one screw mount.

I screwed them up in pairs. One 1 1/4 for the butt end and the 3/4 for the tip end, being that the 3/4' has a fair gap in it you can slide the butt end in the 1 1/4' end and then you can slip the tip in the gap on the 3/4' strap. I screwed this up to the ceiling of the garage.

If this doesn't make sense I can go out and take a pic and post it tomorrow.

I still like the look of those strap type ones that hang from the interior of a SUV or pick up topper.

Anyone know the name of those holders?

I have seen images of F.M.'ers selling boats in the "For sale-Forum" and they are hanging from the ceiling.

They probably are not cheap, but look nice. IMO

I got my verticle style ones free last year at the Sportsman Show. I bought a couple spools of Vanish and went over to the Berkley booth and got them.

I have several peices of 4" PVC running along the rafters in my garage. Each one can easily hold 5 rod/reel combos or about 8 rods without reels. Very, very cheap, easy and it dosen't take up any space. I'll try and get a pic up tomorrow if you need it.

Pics would help guys. I am having the same problem as my fishing addiction grows. I have out grown my 8 rod portable storage holder and looking for suggestions and I have no wall space so I am all ears on the ceiling mounted stuff!

Put the eye screws in garage ceiling on rafter/joist about 4 feet apart (stretch the bungee)

move down about 64" and do the same on the rafter/joist that should be there.

I went to Menards and got some heavy duty W hooks that are made to hang over the rafters and you can get 2 or 3 rods on each side. Six to 8 per rafter. About $2 a piece and very easy set up. Space apart for whatever rod length you have. Easiest and best thing I could find.

I've read that heat really damages line. Does it damage it to be next to the ceiling in a 100* garage in the middle of summer? I need storage for mine also.

Here are the pics I took of my system. I don't know if the heat is any less than sitting in a rod locker under a tarp?? It may not be pretty but its cheap and offers outstanding protection and support.

Heat along with moisture/humidity and sunlight, as in your car, does the most damage for line that's just sitting around.

Is that just for mono? All my rods have superline and braid. Any knowledge on the sun/heat factor on the expensive stuff?

I think sun is the worst enemy of superlines. At least from my experiences.
