It was a great opener until the thunder Monday morning. One short of limits by 8AM Saterday. Caught 13 eyes all males from 15 to 19. #5 shallow shad raps. All early morning and Sunday evening. Pike during the day. Had a great time nothing like walking from the house to the boat.

Nice fish, Don. I hope to get up there one of these days if the weather starts cooperating. I got out to Balsam tonight and ended up catching 5 largemouth and 1 smallmouth while casting in the rocks. Looks like I'll have to try some of my other spots next week.

@Don wow nice looking fish! Looking like we will be up on the lake the 20th and the 21st, hoping we can get into some eyes... Four guys on a pontoon boat will most likely be us Mules. Any suggestions? we got skunked last year (just before the docks got pulled out), but had fun. Thanks!

burning mules, wow, anyone that looks like your avitar gonna be on that boat? If so I'd be happy to ride along and show you a few spots. grin

I think we may have seen you last fall. Were you the boat that looked as though you may have been having TOO much fun?

I hope to be up this weekend too. All I know is on the opener we were catching them in 7-10 FOW. Watch the wind and fish the downwind side of the lake. We were about 50/50 crawlers and fatheads on Lindy type rigs. Those fishing early and late in the day did well trolling small cranks in the shallows. I also heard the crappie bite has started, even the hot babe in your avitar won't get any of my hot spots for them. laugh

Welcome to HSO and please post a report after the weekend.

Another crappy weekend weatherwise. Did manage a couple hours on the water Saturday evening, and a few more yesterday morning. As you can imagine, with the unsettled weather, the walleye bite was inconsistant. I found them up in the weeds and as deep as 16'. Only one keeper in the box. The crappies were nowhere to be found, but the gills seemed to be everywhere.

Let's hope for some better weather this upcoming weekend.

Hey, I am heading out to Yellow for the first time this Memorial Day Weekend. Going out with my father-in-law who has been there before, but I am not going to hang success on his knowledge. Any tips, hints, factoids would be greatly appreciated. Want to get some eyes, crappies, gills, perch, and when it gets boring will try and find a larger northern.

Thanks!

Welcome to HSO civil! Not sure I could give any better tips than what's already in the few previous posts. If the crappies are in, you should see the boats together in a bunch back in the bays. For walleyes, start at the weed edges and move deeper till you find them. Usually this time of year you should never have to go deeper that 12-16 feet. Crawlers or leeches slow trolled should take them. Last week the gills were holding about 10-12'. Small leeches should take them , along with most anything else that swims in the lake. Good luck on the bigger pike, plenty of smaller ones on the weed flats.

Good luck and be sure to tell us how you do.

More unsettled weather over the weekend meant more tough fishing for me. Saturday was a bust, one small wally, a couple gills, a perch, one small pike and not much more. Maybe was fishing too deep, as we got into some Sunday pretty shallow, 6-8'. Ended up with three nice keepers for the day with lots of shorts. All on crawlers.

The sunfish are on a tear. Small leeches under bobbers off any structure in 8-10' is really puting up some numbers of nice fish right now.

My wifes family has a cabin on the yellow river and I have been going up there at least 2 or 3 times a year for the last 7 years. Since its about a half hour boat ride to the lake we've always just fished on the river for bass and pike. Memorial weekend we got tired of fishing on the river and decided to head up the lake and try for some walleyes even though I did not bring any of my walleye fishing gear (found a slip sinker and hook to make a lindy rig). We fished for a a little over an hour and caught 3 walleyes, all three were about 14 and a half inches. We pulled lindy rigs and crawlers on the north side of the lake between 10 and 20 feet of water. All 3 fish came out of 12 feet. Will be back for 4 days over 4th of July weekend and thinking about spending alot more time fishing for walleyes. Just wondering what the average size walleyes that come out of the lake are. You guys sort through a bunch of smaller ones to get a few nice ones? Also if using live bait do you guys have better luck pulling bottom bouncers and spinners, lindy rig and a plain hook or floating jig, vertical jigging? Any specific colors that work well on the lake? Thanks for the help. Can't wait to get back up there.

Seems year after year those fish are 14 3/4" long. grin Actually, sometimes you can go an entire weekend and everything is 15+, but that's rare. There's a bunch os 16-18" fish to be had, anything over that is also rare, but they are there too. I caught a 25 incher opening weekend, that's the biggest I've caught here for several years.

Spinners, jigs, slip bobbers, cranks all work at times, but I usually just pull lindy rigs. Often bright colored hot hooks and a chartreus bead works well, other times a red hook and bead is the ticket. That's just about all I use these days. Crawlers/leeches probably 50/50, some days they show a distinct preference of one over the other.

Keep an eye on here and I'll keep posting my reports. FWIW, July has been the hot month for walleye action over the years. Good luck!

Not a fast weekend on Yellow but I got a few walleyes. I got the walleyes on fatheads, leeches and crawlers - none were better than the other. Saturday I got 11 fish but only one was a keeper 17" fish. The rest were 14.5" long. On Sunday I got fewer fish but I did get a double header of 20" fish. I really need some rod holders in the boat and I need to become a better net man. I should have lost both fish with the bad net job I did on those two fish. I wedged one rod in the seat while I had both fish on. I kept one to make the mother in law happy and let one go. She gets no fish for the rest of the summer since she said the 20" fish was kind of small!

Later in the day I took the kids to Taylors Lake for some quick fishing on small bluegills. When we were leaving an old guy came by the ramp to see how we did. I told the kids to go along with me and I pulled out the 20" walleye and said we just got that fish. He said he had been fishing that lake for 20 years and had never landed a walleye. I told him I get them in that lake all the time in the deep spot. As he was walking away shaking his head, I told him the truth and he got a good laugh and so did the kids.

Nothing to brag about except the big huge blue gillz I was able to find. Fished Friday night, all day saturday, and sunday morning. Could of had a real decent live well full of fish, but let everything go. saturday morning did have a big gator but lost it at the boat! All in all, countless blue gillz, and perch, and 11 walleyes with only 1 going 18", all the others were shorts. Did have a great time, and met some real awesome people at Donbo's resort. It was real nicve to meet Don, and Mary, and Mary as well. Looking forward to another Yellow visit in the near future! Great lake!

Oh yeah, sturgeon jumping was pretty cool too!!

Hey DonBo,

I will be on Yellow this Friday, to bad it will be post cold-front. I have fished Yellow 1-2 times a year for that past 5-6 years, and never really got a handle on the lake. Have had good days and bad. Looks like Lindy rigging just off the break is still working, would that be the tactic to start? Also, how is the mid day bite usually? With my kids I won't get an early start, and likely won't be able to stay until dusk, unfortunately. Any particular location to find the Gills during the mid day? Or just hit the weed edges with worms and bobbers?

Thanks for any pointers, need to try and keep the kids interested so I can stay on the water as long as possible.

It's a good mid-day bite because the water is stained. Gills are going great right now. Get in 6-10 FOW off any small point with small leeches and you'll catch 'em.

You could also get on most any weed edge with bobbers and a mix of leeches and minnows and have a mixed bag of gills, crappies, walleye, pike, bass....you get the idea.

Sadly I will not be up this weekend, but good luck and let us know how you do.

My family and I are heading up july 2nd through 9th, We haven't been to the area for probably 5 or 6 years. Appears that Yellow is still the place for walleyes, just curious how the bite has been recently, and what depths or baits have been good. we are actually staying on big sand, would that be as good as anyplace to take our little kids for some bluegills? I only fished it once a long time ago and it seems that was all we caught.

Walleye fishing on Yellow has been slow lately, probably due to the wierd inconsistant weather more than anything else. Hopefully that will change soon. July fishing has normally been the best of the year. Fish can be anywhere from up tight to the weeds down to 20' or more depending on current weather conditions, ie sunlight or clouds, wind direction, wave action, etc. Crawlers or leeches can and will catch walleyes all month, again this preference changes day to day, even hour to hour at times. Read through the previous posts for other good tips, and follow along with new posts for more up to date info.

Thanks for the tips, i will definitely be watching to see anything starts to work well. little disappointed on the slow part however lots can change in a week , so hopefully i won't have to hear how good they bit last week. Actually your information on the mobility of the walleyes is very interesting. I they are in tight to the weed lines what do you recommend. crankbaits or still try to use worm or leech rigs?

Finally, some nice warm weather. Fishing really picked up yesterday with many walleyes caught, however none big enough for the livewell. frown A good start to the day today too, but quickly went downhill. Still, we caught probably 15 walleys in just a few hours. Fish were marked and caught from 8' to 18', all on crawlers. Bright colored beads or hooks seemed to be key.

The guys fishing gills were doing better this week then last. Still lots of 8"+ coming from 7-10 FOW, mostly on small leeches.

Glad to heard the fishing is picking up. Can't wait to get out this weekend. Is their any places on the lake where I would be able to catch any walleyes from shore? I will be there Thursday night and my brother in law has the boat and wont be there till Friday night, but I'd like to try for some walleyes Friday morning. Anyone have room for another person in the boat on Friday morning for a couple hours?
