If you're using Big minnows for Pike a minimum size # 2 is in order. # 8 or 10 are way too small. Also hook the minnow just at the front of the dorsal fin and you'll get more hookups than if you hook through the tail.

It sounds funny but Tru-Turn worm hooks work great as well. I found out the hard way a couple years ago when I ran out of my normal circle hooks. I've been using 2/0 size and I have very good success rates. The hook always seems to be in the roof of the mouth, just like it's suposed to be.

My best hooking percentage on Pike has been with Eagle Claw 45 Auto bass worm hooks. Let them run, then pause, and when the next run starts ,SET. There can be swallowed hooks that you have to cut the line with, but usually they can be removed.

"Same applies to quick strike rigs"

Of course it does, hence the name "quick-strike". I was just pointing out that if using single hooks and planning on release YOU STILL WANT TO SET ASAP, not wait for it to swallow the bait like used to be popular with single hook rigs.

EBass- What brand and size of circle hooks do you like?

I tried Gamaktsu (sp?) octopus circle but had a really low hooking percentage. I was tip up fishing for pike with shiner minnows.

I almost exclusively fish tip-ups for norts and 'eyes, and I use the big, red Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp Octopus hooks.

I also agree with Bob's method too...let em' run, wait for the pause, and then set the hook as soon as they go again.

Good luck!

" Sorry, thought you were trying to rip on single hook users (aka me)- I agree with your post.

I thought circle hooks and Octopus hooks are different?

I roll with the same brand as you. Gammy's but I look for the thin wire. Some circle hooks are thick for catfish, so avoid those unless you're cattin'. Also do not set the hook on a circle. Everyone knows that...right? It's more like a slow sweep for a hook set. Feel the fish and give a slow yet steady pull with maybe a lil umph at the end. It takes practice and I hated them at first. I called them the $2 hook and made fun of my friend, until I was gut hooking said fish. I hate that, so I swtiched. I don't think I've ever seen a gut hooked fish with a circle hook. Also the size of the hook depends on the size of the bait. I couldn't tell ya the #'s w/o looking at them, but I like the smaller hooks I can get away with, yet still have enough gap for the hook point.

We fish tip ups for big pike using minnows in the 12-16" range, some call them decoys. I use a single large treble, anywhere from 2/0 to 5/0, with a tiny bead and blade to make it legal. It is not uncommon for the bigger fish to simply grab the bait and run with it, we tried the "set it right when you get there" game and this only resulted in stolen/lost minnow. The fish seem to make long runs then stop to eat. It is not umcommon for a fish to slowy take out line for 1-2 minutes without stopping. Once they stop they are positioning the bait to eat it, let start the second run and give em the hookset! Never had to worry about gut/throat hooking as it has never happened with the magnum baits. Even the bigger fish 36-41" have been hooked clean in the jaw with the treble. Standard quickset just haven't performed for me at, no matter how I fish them
