Dangerous practice

I don't spear fish so I don't have a need to cut large holes in the ice but I was wondering about something. Is it easier to lift a 2' square block of ice out of the lake and put on the surface than to push it under? Without doing it I can't say for sure but it seems to me it would much easier to just push it under the surface rather than lifting out.

I remember back in the 70s when a family friend was cruising across a lake after dark with a sled and hit one of those ice blocks. I don't know how fast he was going but back then 40mph would have been considered moving pretty good. If I recall correctly his sled tumbled end-over-end numerous times. Fortunately for him, he was thrown clear and didn't get seriously hurt.

Shouldn't there be a law against leaving these blocks of ice on the lake? They can be difficult to see especially at night or in bright conditions or snowy weather.

A tree branch in the location is very important in my opinion. I went knee deep with one leg into the edge of a spearing hole last year that was unmarked and covered by snow. Luckily I caught myself before going all the way in. When I see the branches, I make sure to steer clear. I was there with one of my kids and luckily it was me and not her. mad.gif

LOL that just sounds funny!!!!

The blocks just need to be push back in PERIOD!!! I’m a snowmobiler so I always push mine back in because I would hate to hit one with a sled. People get lazy and don’t want to try to get it to move after they spear in the same hole for a few days. A law against it, Maybe but it would be hard to enforce it.

Well, it depends. Are you suggesting to push the block under and then put your permanent house over the hole with the block over the ice?

My opinion...it should be put back in the hole if a temporary house was there. But, if you have a permanent house and decide to move after it sat for a week...what do you do with the ice block? Break it up?

A lake does not give the snowmobiler the right to go speeding across just because they think it is all sooth and free to fly. They have to share in some of the responsibility too.

I usually break my block up and bank it around the house and put snow on it. Two years ago I was moving my house and a snowmobiler came by and "told" me that I must remove the outline of my house in the ice (6-8 inch deep wedges) for it what where "he likes to drive". I just smiled and went on my way....

I agree they dont have the right, but if you left a clear block 18 inches tall and 3 feet around sitting on top of the ice and a snowmobile hit it and died, would you not feel like maybe you should have did something else with it. I have witnessed an atv that hit a block from a spear hole, I had to call 911 for this person, he was non responsive. I heard he survived but was parilized for life. Just comon sense should be used, by all.

I wasnt indicating you did HH. Just a general point!

I have had 2 fishing outings in the last week, with snowmobiles flying past me, at about 60+mph within 20 ft. Back and forth, first night they did this for about 45 minutes, small lake nobody else on it. They had the entire rest of the lake to ride, but chose to ride about 20 ft from us. I left it alone, and kept cool and left the lake. The second time I there were more people on the lake, and I was alittle concernd with someone getting hit, I confronted them they left, came back and flew past us again, and flicked us off. I wish I would have gotten the # on the sled, but I didnt. There is no excuse for their behavior, in my case or in yours, but I was just stating if someone leaves a big hole, or a big block on the ice, some one just may get hurt.

I wasn't trying to be negative to your either.

Even if someone was a turd, I would not wish them to hit a large ice block...especially if I left it out there. I would feel bad.

But, I feel that fisherman are getting better at not leaving blocks or dangerous items on the lake...but snowmobilers are getting more careless.

No, your block needs to go back into the lake no matter what!!! I have had a few permanent spear houses that have sat on the lake for weeks and I’m still able to bust the block free and push it into that ice. It doesn’t matter if you are going 60 or 6 if a ski from a sled hits it you will get hurt!!!

Who know if most snowmobilers even know about spearing!!

So, If i didn't fish for two weeks and decide to move my house this weekend...I need to flatten out where my house what as much as possible? I have to cut my hole open again and sink that block plus the old blocks in the hole?

Wow, that is a lot of work to protect someone not being careful on the lake.

I break the blocks up and mark the spot, but is that not enough?

We can’t make this world dummy proof nor should we.

I don’t like shoving the block down when I spear, so out of consideration for others on sleds or atv’s, I break up the ice block into many smaller pieces to avoid any accidents.

Who is responsible for the snowmobiler that hits an ice block caused by an ice heave and gets hurt? The state?-don’t think so. We need to take responsibility for our actions.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
